Teaching Math
Online Video (Requires free login) series shows teachers demonstrating "the
fine art of guiding students through reasoning and problem solving." Along
the way, students chime in with comments about their experiences, and
the
overall
learning milieu is improved as a result. All told, the series contains
twenty episodes which cover patterns, congruence, exponential functions,
and the very act of communicating about mathematical ideas.
Math Vids -
MathVids.com is a website dedicated to providing high quality, instructional, free math videos to middle school, high school, and college students who need math help.
MathVids.com is a website dedicated to providing high quality, instructional, free math videos to middle school, high school, and college students who need math help.
World
of Mathematics -Also known as MathWorld, this site is a "comprehensive, and
interactive mathematics encyclopedia intended for students, educators,
math enthusiasts, and researchers." The subject index includes
algebra, applied mathematics, calculus and analysis, discrete mathematics,
the foundations and history of mathematics, geometry, number theory,
probability and statistics, recreational mathematics, and topology.
College
Algebra Online Tutorials -- "If
you need help in college algebra, you have come to the right place." The
West Texas A&M
University's Virtual Math Lab have done a fine job creating a series
of online algebra tutorials
for students and anyone else who might be returning to the world of algebra.
Each tutorial
contains information about learning objectives, full explanations, and
numerous examples of how to correctly solve problems.
Purplemath contains
hundreds of lessons designed to help students who might be having trouble
with algebra.
As Stapel notes on the site’s homepage, “These lessons emphasize
the practicalities rather than the technicalities, demonstrating dependable
techniques, warning of likely “trick” questions, and pointing
out common mistakes.” Includes lessons on dozens
of algebraic situations, such as using the midpoint formula, finding
the slope of a straight line, and graphing systems of linear inequalities.
The site also contains a section of external sites which have been reviewed
by Stapel, including those that offer quizzes, worksheets, and related
materials.
The
Mathematical Atlas: A Gateway to Modern Mathematics - site provides
a collection of articles about the many subfields of math and includes
definitions, brief biographies, and explanations. Each topic includes
a history, related areas, and subfields as well as related print
and Internet resources.
S.O.S.
Mathematics Tables and Formulas - An easily accessed list of
common mathematics tables and formulas. Multiplication, primes, integrals,
trignometrics, conversions, and derivatives are only some of the
available
tables. There is a section of online examinations to test your mathematical
knowledge. A Cyberboard for questions is included, as well as links
to books and additional math sites.
Wolfram
Research's Mathematical Functions - An information resource for
over 37,000 mathematical functions. Browse by function category or
search. The site "details the interrelationships between the special
functions of mathematical physics and the elementary functions of mathematical
analysis as well as the interrelationships between the functions in
each group.
Ask Dr.
Math - operated at Drexel University, is the place to go to
find answers to almost any kind of mathematics problem. An enormous
browseable
archive of questions and their solutions is divided into categories
ranging from basic addition and subtraction to calculus and fractals.
Cornell University
Library historical math monographs offers digital
facsimiles of 512 mathematical monographs.
