Virginia's health care employers need trained medical office administrators to help manage their organizations.
Tidewater Community College’s Career Studies Certificate in Medical Administrative Assistant helps students establish successful, in-demand careers managing the health care, insurance and business practices of medical facilities.
Our program develops general medical and administrative skills important for performing administrative support in the health care environment so you can keep up with the rapidly changing healthcare and medical insurance technologies and regulations.
Our instructors have designed a one-year program to teach you the communication and patient relations skills employers are looking for. You’ll learn how to maintain electronic health records, handle billing, schedule appointments, understand medical terms, work with medical records and protect patient privacy. You will also complete an externship with on-the-job training that allows you to apply the skills you've learned in the classroom.
While the medical administrative assistant program prepares you for immediate employment in a hospital, doctors' office or clinic, it is also designed to prepare you for certification exams that can strengthen your appeal to potential employers. The career studies certificate program also acts as an ideal refresher for those returning to the field, or as a means of upgrading skills for professional advancement.
