Early Childhood Development Career Information



Child care teachers’ salaries vary greatly from as little as $9,000 per year - $36,000 per year.  The salary is dependent on the education level of the teacher, experience, type of program, and number of hours worked.  See the Virginia Child Development Career Lattice for teacher qualification requirements. 




Directors' salaries range from $9.00 - $25.00 per hour.  The amount is influenced by the qualifications of the Director and the programs’ resources.  Directors need to have earned an Associate, Bachelors, or Masters degree in child development or a related field. 

Program Administrator 

A child care program director must manage many things at once and still be able to prioritize all tasks in a day's time. While remaining calm and collected, the child care director must also be aware that changes may affect the staff and the enrolled families. Whether the director directs a small family child care home business or a large center, the skills required are similar. Administrators’ salaries depend on experience, credentials, and location.  Administrators salaries range from $13,000 – $72,000 per year.  An Associates degree, Bachelor or Masters degree is required.  See the Virginia Child Development Lattice for requirements. 

Regulator of a Home Based Program

Regulator’s salaries range from $23,000-$43,000 per year.  Regulatory positions require a Bachelors or Masters degree.  These positions can be found at the Department of Social Services.

Family Specialist

Family Specialists can earn from $10,000 – $42,000. Salaries vary by agency, education and experience.  Degrees required for Family Specialist positions are Associate, LPMN, or Registered Nurse.  Bachelors or Masters in Health, Early Education, Child Development and Social Work are required.  These positions are typically found at Child Resource and Referral Agencies, the Department of Social Services, or any one of the many agencies serving children and families.



Trainers/Educators could be independent consultants with salaries ranging from $10 - $100 an hour, or if working as a faculty member could range from $30,000 -$80,000 yearly.  If working for the state or a local community agency, trainers/educators earn from $11,000 - $50,000.    Credential requirements range from Bachelors to a Ph. D.


Consultants must schedule their own work and are required to have earned a Bachelors or Masters degree.  Hourly rates vary from $10 - $100.00 per hour, depending on education and experience.


Merchandisers’ salaries range from $9.00 - $25.00 per hour.  Educational requirements for merchandising positions are usually Associate or Bachelor degrees.  Positions can be found at educational equipment and supply companies, book sellers or vendors who sell to educators at professional conferences, workshops, and in stores.
