Introduction to Emergency Medical Technology

Urgent medical attention determines the difference between life or death for numerous victims of motor vehicle accidents, injuries, heart attacks, near drownings, shortness of breath,  strokes, poisonings, and gunshot wounds.  Emergency medical personnel are trained to provide immediate medical care and transport of the sick or injured to medical facilities.

The Tidewater Community College Emergency Medical Technology department has several  programs that will train an individual from basic EMT to  Paramedic.   Advanced Life Support (ALS) studies are available to EMT-Enhanced, Intermediate and Paramedic levels.  Although all students are encouraged to complete their studies through to the Paramedic level, students may take each level separately. Flexible schedules allow students to plan their education around their otherwise busy lifestyle.  Day and night classes are available.  All courses are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

The Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) consists of the Intermediate and Paramedic Career Studies, an EMS and Fire elective, and general studies.  Many students first obtain their paramedic certification and then continue taking courses to complete requirements for the degree.

EMS skills and knowledge are relevant to ambulance providers, fire-rescue, hospitals, industry, military, and volunteer services.  Employment for EMS providers is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations.  Driving the increase will be a growing population and an increase in the senior citizens who are more likely to need emergency services.

Criminal Background Check

The certified background check is mandatory for any student wanting to enter any of the ALS Programs under the EMS curriculum. Programs whos students are included in the mandatory background check include Enhanced, Intermediate, Paramedic, Accelerated Paramedic and Critical Care. The bakground check needs to be completed prior to a student beginning his or her clinical rotations; therfore, the student can begin classes without having the background check completed first.

If a student is currently affiliated with an agency or is coming from the military and is able to bring a letter from his or her agency/command within 6 months of entering the program and the letter states that the student "does not have a criminal record or any sexual or child offenses", then that will be acceptable, and he or she would not have to pay for another online check.

Students entering the EMT-Basic do NOT have to have a background check.

Health Professions students assigned to clinical rotations or internships at some healthcare facilities are personally responsible for completing the required background checks or screenings and assuring that results are obtained by the healthcare or medical facility that asks for them. Students are required to bear the costs of such tests. It will be the decision of the clinical affiliate (healthcare or medical facility) whether the student will be allowed to participate in the clinical activities should there be positive criminal or sex offender results. Tidewater Community College does not assume any responsibility for obtaining or evaluating the results of a criminal background check, drug screen or other check, maintaining the records of results or for delivering them to clinical sites. Students may not request to be assigned only to those sites that do not require such checks. Students who refuse to undergo a criminal background check or drug screen or other required check may not be able to be placed at another facility and consequently may not be able to complete program requirements and graduate. Tidewater Community College will make reasonable efforts to place all enrolled students in clinical training.

Students are also reminded that licensing boards for certain health care occupations and professions may deny, suspend or revoke a license or may deny the individual the opportunity to sit for an examination if an applicant has a criminal history or is convicted or pleads guilty or nolo contendere to a felony or other serious crime. Successful completion of a health professions program of study at Tidewater Community College does not guarantee licensure, the opportunity to sit for a licensure examination, certification or employment in the relevant heath care occupation.

A physical exam within the last two years with proof of specific immunizations is required before you can start the clinical internship.

EMT - Enhanced

The EMT Enhanced Program provides the EMS  Enhanced provider with specific skills to provide a limited amount of advanced life support (ALS) treatment to patients.

The EMT Enhanced is authorized to initiate specific intravenous infusions and administer a limited number of intravenous, subcutaneous and intra muscular medications based upon local medical protocols.  Additional skills in airway management and endotracheal intubation are included in the program.  The skills utilized by the EMT Enhanced  may vary due to local requirements of agency Operational Medical Director discretion.

The EMT Enhanced program consists of:

  • EMS 151 Introduction to Advanced Life Support (4 credits)
  • EMS 170 ACLSInternship (1 credit)

Students who are only interested in completing EMT- E must be 911 agency affiliated in order to complete the field internship requirements.

EMT - Intermediate  & Paramedic Program

The Paramedic Program is four semesters.  The curriculum meets the U.S. Department of Transportation's’s 1998 Paramedic National Standard Curriculum.

Students upon completion of requirements are eligible to test  at the following points in the curriculum:

  • after completion of the 1st semester, Virginia EMT Enhanced (if agency sponsored)
  • end of the 2nd semester, National Registry Intermediate
  • end of the 4th semester, National Registry Paramedic.

Upon successful completion of the National Registry the student applies for Virginia certification.

The classroom schedule is 2 nights a week from 1800-2200 or 1 day a week 0800-1700 with occasional Saturday classes. Operations (EMS 211) is usually offered as an online course and can be completed during any semester. The program is set up as a flip-flop if registration is sufficient to support both sections. Clinical and field is scheduled around the student's needs.

The Paramedic program develops the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver the highest level of pre hospital emergency care using basic and advanced life support techniques.

The program is designed to educate the EMT in all areas of pre-hospital patient care.  Courses include:  preparatory, airway and ventilation management, patient assessment, trauma, medical, special considerations such as pediatrics, geriatrics, OB/GYN, neonatal, behavioral, assessment-based management, and operations.

In Virginia, all initial intermediate and Paramedic Programs are required to test the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.  Upon successful completion  of the National Registry testing process, the technician must apply for Virginia certification before being allowed to practice at this level.

Certification or licensure at the Paramedic level is the prevailing national standard for advanced life support training. Virginia does not require Intermediates or Paramedics to maintain the National Registry certification, but it is usually beneficial if you plan to relocate.
