What is the Dual Enrollment Program? |
Dual Enrollment is a partnership between Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) and the Portsmouth Campus of Tidewater Community College (TCC) that is designed to provide a wider range of course options for high school students in academic, career/occupational-technical subject areas. Dual Enrollment allows high school students to meet the course requirements for high school graduation while simultaneously earning college credits. |
How is a student identified for the Dual Enrollment Program? |
Interested students should contact the Guidance Department at their high school. |
Who participates in Dual Enrollment? |
High school juniors and seniors who are interested in earning college credit make great candidates. |
What classes are included in the Dual Enrollment Program? |
| Each year, PPS and TCC update the courses available through the Dual Enrollment Program. College Composition (English), Political Science, and Sociology are courses traditionally offered in the Program at the PPS high schools |
What is the cost? |
While the State Board for Community Colleges establishes the cost of tuition and fees each year, PPS offsets some of the cost and will determine the cost per student for the parent. PPS also covers cost for books and provides transportation, when necessary. |
What’s different about the classes being offered through Dual Enrollment? |
All classes maintain the same rigor and content as classes taught at the college campus. |
Do I receive college credit for these classes? |
Yes, college credit will be awarded by the community college to the participating high school students upon successful completion (successful means a grade of C or higher) of the course(s). Also, high school credit will be awarded to the participating high school students in compliance with state standards |
How do I sign up? |
Any student interested in Dual Enrollment must complete a TCC application and all appropriate forms and take the COMPASS placement test. Your high school counselor will notify students as to acceptance. |
