Objective
#3
To
meet with mathematics instructors and others who are engaged in
mathematics software and other instructional aids development.
|
At
North Harris Community College the focus group was impressed with
the facilities and the administrative support which Dr. Taylor
said, has been very supportive with funding for faculty training,
technology equipment and released time. Dr. Peveto, who
is involved in an on-going project to write a homework and testing
program using the software program, Authorware, made the presentation. The
college sent him for training in the use of Authorware, which
he has used to develop this math system. He gets released time
on a continuing basis to update his program as changes are recognized
and needed. This program allows students to interact with
the mathematics problems and provides feedback to students. Copies
of this software were given to members of the focus group. Students
at North Harris can check out videos of lectures made in-house
by one of their mathematics professors. These videos cover most
of the topics in many of the courses offered. The department
head was willing to send copies of these lectures to TCC upon
request.
Dr. Gilbert demonstrated Geometers Sketchpad for the group. This
software does ruler and compass constructions with commands from
the keyboard and mouse. Not only can this software be used in
teaching geometry but is used by all courses utilizing graphing
of equations (as all math 150 and above do). Rather than
sketching difficult figures on the chalkboard, these figures can
be created in advance, stored in Sketchpad, recalled in the classroom,
and rotated and changed as needed. |

Recommendation:
|
| The
college needs to purchase Geometers Sketchpad, Fathom, and Authorware.
The faculty needs to be sent for training in these software programs
and given released time to integrate them into the courses. Copies
of videos from North Harris will be requested to determine if
they will be beneficial to TCC students. Other instructional videos
for critical and difficult areas in mathematics need to be developed
for our students. The group recommends that the Math Lab and faculty
develop such videos. |
