The Applied Music Courses available at the Portsmouth Campus are private lessons in several different instruments. Students can be just beginning the study of an instrument or already have several years of experience with an instrument. Students have the option of registering for 1 or 2 hours of credit. The 1 hour class is a 30 minute private lesson every week and the 2 hours class is a 60 minute private lesson every week. In addition to registering, each of these classes has an applied fee which is paid directly to the instructor. The 1 hour credit class fee is $240 for the semester ($16/lesson) and the 2 credit hours class fee is $450 for the semester ($30/lesson). Students may use Pell Grant monies to help defray the cost. Financial Aid will not pay the instructor directly though. Students should check with Mrs. Winsor before registering to make sure we have an instructor for their instrument and to make sure the instructor has room in his/her schedule. If the student wants to register for an instrument other than piano or voice, he/she needs to have access to an instrument as the school cannot supply one. Piano and voice students may have access to the practice rooms on the Portsmouth Campus.
Chorus 137 & 237 meets for rehearsals Monday and Wednesday mornings all semester which culminates in a concert at the end of the semester. Our conductor is Mr. David Warren. Mr. Warren also offers a Choral Conducting class during spring term.
The Basic Musicianship 101 and 102 classes are sequenced much like Algebra I and II. These are music theory classes and if a student has already had several years of music study, he/she may be able to quiz out of Basic Musicianship 101. Mrs. Winsor has a pre-test which determines if the student has enough knowledge to register for 102 without 101. The 101 class includes pitch and rhythm notation, intervals, modes, scales, key signatures, and triads. The 102 class covers seventh chords and four part harmony. Each is a 3 credit class.
The Music Theory 111 and 112 classes are also sequenced. These classes are intended for the student who wishes to major in music. Each is a 4 credit class. The course content is the same as 101 and 102. The additional time is spent in ear training.
Advanced Music Theory 211 and 212 are sequenced classes which come after 112. Each 4 credit class continues with more complex chords and chromatic harmonies as well as advanced ear training.
Music Appreciation 121 and 122 are also sequenced, but 121 is NOT a prerequisite for 122. Students may take one or the other, or may take both in either order. 121 covers western music history from the Medieval Era through the Classical Era. 122 starts with the Romantic Era through the present. Jazz history is also covered in 122. The same text is used for both semesters.
Music History 221 and 222 are sequenced 3 credit classes covering the music history of western culture.
