When I was 12 years old I became interested in language acquisition
as I kept a diary of the progress my baby brother made in learning how
to speak. Soon afterwards, I was fascinated by people I met through
family travel to Europe, the Middle East, South American and Central
America. As a college student I first majored in German, then in teaching
ESL, then in linguistics. I lived in the Middle East for several years
training English teachers. In addition, I taught ESL in New York City
at the university level. Always interested in teacher training, I was
the director of graduate ESL teacher programs in New York and Michigan.
In addition, I occasionally assist student teachers who come from ODU
to practice in my classes. The field is a continual source of pleasure
as I enjoy teaching my students at TCC very much. My educational philosophy
is to challenge students to learn more than they think they can, but
to do it all with a sense of humor. I am especially pleased when students
continue their studies and become teachers, too.
