Astronomy Department

Courses

Astronomy Course Descriptions.  NAS 131 & NAS 132 represent the two semester sequence in astronomy that is taught at the Beach campus.  NAS 131 is astronomy of the planets & solar system.   NAS 132 is astronomy of the stars, galaxies & the universe.  Taking the courses in sequence is not required.  You may take NAS 132 before NAS 131.

Telescopes

The astronomy department at the Virginia Beach Campus of Tidewater Community College has several telescopes and imaging equipment.  Observation sessions are an integral part of the astronomy program.  Students are required to attend a minimum number throughout the semester.

  • 8" Meade LX-200
  • 12" Meade LX-200
  • 8" Celestron Ultima
  • 8" Celestron Powerstar
  • H-alpha filter for solar observing
  • Pictor 1616 CCD Imaging system w/ autoguide & color filter wheel
Astronomers Club

Back Bay Amateur Astronomers Club or the year can be found at the BBAA site.

Owning a telescope is not a requirement to join the club.  If you are interested in astronomy and have thought about buying your own telescope, it might be a good idea to talk to several members and attend some skywatches.  You will be able to check out the different types of scopes and look through them to compare.
