Prague ~ Czech Republic

A sunrise view with Hradcany (Prague castle) in the distance. This is taken from the famous Charles Bridge that spans the Vltava River.

This is the interior of the St. Vitus Cathedral that sits within the Prague Castle complex. This is high Gothic architecture at its finest.

Gothic is really all about beautiful painted light as it passes through the stained glass windows, and yet this architectural style is commonly represented only in black & white. It is the color and the soaring heights that truly typify Gothic style.

This is the famous Hotel Europa that is on Wenceslas Square in Prague.

This is a house where Franz Kafka once lived. Apparently, Kafka lived in many different places in Prague, and there are many cafes and societies dedicated to his philosophies and teachings.

This house is situated in the "minature village" in the Prague Castle complex. These are tiny houses where the king once had all the alchemists performing their experiments.

This group of young people took to the streets to celebrate the European Hockey Championship won by the Czech Republic over Slovakia. These two countries have been huge rivals ever since they split up the former Czechoslavakia in the early 1990's.

It was a joy to see young people celebrating with such national pride. Here they are proudly carrying their flag and sharing exuberance over the victory with everyone. There were never any violent demonstrations even though Prague is a city comparable to NYC.

Athletes from the Czech Republic have won a number of medals in the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney. I'm quite sure there is much of this same celebration going on. The athletes will probably be welcomed home with a huge celebration in the Olde Towne Square of Prague.
