DIGITAL
ARTWORK
During my last few days in Beijing I have started another photography project
using the digital camera. I am surreptitiously taking pictures on the subway.
The great thing about the digital camera is that after you spend the money
to buy the camera, taking pictures is free - no film or processing. It really
gives you freedom to shoot a lot of pictures. With the three disks that I
brought, I can shoot about ninety images before I have to download them to
the computer. I have been frustrated in not shooting many people on the street,
mainly due to my shyness and the discomfort of many people about having their
pictures made by strangers. (This is often not true, many people are happy,
even honored, to have their pictures made. You just point to the camera and
gesture a question and they tell you yes or no.) Anyway, I came up with the
idea of "shooting from the hip" while riding the subway. First,
I make sure the flash is turned off. I forgot this a couple of times which
made for embarrassing moments. I just looked at the camera with a puzzled
look as if it had gone off on its own. Here are a few of the images from this
project.
