VaCIE Exchange, Fall 2000
Each fall an exchange visitor will come to TCC to learn
about how the college operates, and will typically give lectures or
demonstrations in their field of expertise. Then in the Spring, someone
from TCC will go to England or Ireland and participate in a likewise
manner. This year's VaCIE CEMP exchange people are Melissa Degaraff
of Tidewater Community College and Helen Stanier from the Sixth Form
College in England.

"I have served as Admissions
Counselor at the Viriginia Beach Campus since 12/96. My primary
activities are in the areas of college admission, recruitment
and academic advising. I will be traveling to Sixth Form College,
Stoke-on-Trent, England in May. Like Helen, I am interested
in examining recruitment and retention practices during my study
visit."

| "I am employed at the Sixth
Form College in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.
The college is a purpose-built establishment catering for almost
two thousand 16 to 19 year-old students. It is divided into five
sections, each of which is headed by a Senior Tutor who is responsible
for pastoral support and guidance. The Senior Tutor is aided by
a Pastoral Assistant. Students who fall within my jurisdiction
are mainly those with a major interest in Mathematics, Information
Technology and Science."

Susan de Veer of International Student Services
listens intently as Helen describes some of her experiences in
the United States. |

Some students stopped by the informal reception.
Most of the questions regarded the differences between attending
school in the US as opposed to attending in England, Helen's
home.

Experience has shown that the visitor's presence benefits
the entire host campus. It is natural that while the VCCS college
delegates attend to their usual responsiblilities that the visitor
will assist in these duties. Previous UK and Irish visitors have investigated
specific areas of the host college, interviewed appropriate college
personnel, and observed selected meetings and classes. In addition,
they have lectured or given lab demonstrations on pre-arranged topics,
spoken to faculty or community groups, visited other colleges or universities,
local businesses and professional and social organizations, and have
been shown local sights.
