cmve @ TCC: New Student Checklist

 

Admission producedures are different depending on the type of student you are. Please choose from the options below to find the information that is relevant to you.

 

ACTIVE DUTY VETERANS DEPENDENTS

 

ACTIVE DUTY

  1. Complete Admissions Application at a TCC Admissions Office, Base Office or Online

  2. Apply for Federal Aid
    • Complete the free application for Federal Student Aid. TCC's school code is 003712

  3. Meet with a Base Representative or Academic Advisor, bring the following items:
    • Current Military Orders
    • Proof of residency (item of mail with name and local address if residing off-base)
    • Military ID Card

  4. Have Military and Transfer Credit Evaluated
  5. Apply for a SOC (Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges) Agreement

  6. Take the TCC placement test

  7. Attend an Orientation Session

  8. Register for Classes

  9. Pay tuition no later than due Date. Payment Options:
    • Tuition Assistance
    • Financial Aid
    • GI Bill
    • Automatic Payment (Installment Plan)
    • Cash and/or Credit Card

VETERANS

  1. Fill out the TCC Application for admissions on campus or Online

  2. Apply for Federal Aid
    • Complete the free application for Federal Student Aid. TCC's school code is 003712

  3. Apply for V.A. Education Benefits:
    • New: Online (Print a copy after submission)
    • Used benefits elsewhere: Fill out a 22-1995 to change your place of study with the VA.
    • Print and bring a copy to the VA Office

  4. Take the TCC Placement Test

  5. Have Military and Transfer Credit Evalatuated
  6. Attend an Orientation Session

  7. Consult  a CMVE/VA Office Academic Advisor for curriculum and/or class schedule advice. Bring an unofficial copy of your transcripts with you.

  8. Register for classes Online

  9. Pay tuition not later than due date
  10. Bring the following to V.A. Office:
    • Printed copy of your class schedule
    • Advisement Transcript
    • Payment receipt / Financial Aid confirmation / Stamped Authorization letter
    • DD 214 (Member-4) - for Veterans
    • Certificate of Eligibility / Application Form for Education Benefits

DEPENDENTS

  1. Complete TCC Admissions Application on campus or online

  2. Apply for Federal Aid
    • Complete the free application for Federal Student Aid. TCC's school code is 003712

  3. Apply for Veteran Benefits, if applicable. Choose from the options below:

    • Chapter 35 (Dependents Education Assistance Program)
      Apply for veteran education benefits at https://www.ebenefits.va.gov. Print a copy after submission and bring it to the VA Offices of Tidewater Community College.


    • VMSDEP (Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program)

      This is a State of Virginia benefit that waives the cost of tuition at public colleges and universities; and also providing a book stipend.

    • Chapter 33 (Transfer of Entitlement)

      Active duty members may transfer their Post 9/11 GI Bill to their spouse or dependents if certain conditions are met. Visit the VA's website for more info.

      To transfer the benefit: 

      • Use your CAC card, DoD Self-Service Logon, or DFAS pin (myPay) to log on to the DoD Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) Web application: http://milconnect.dmdc.mil.  Print a copy of the screen once the status says “approved” and bring a copy to the VA Offices of Tidewater Community College.
      • Once approved, family member must apply for the benefit  completing VA Form 22-1990e with the Department of Veterans Affairs at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp.  Print a copy after submission and bring it to the VA Offices of Tidewater Community College.
      • The active duty service member meeting the enlistment requirements may transfer up to 36 months of benefits.  Members can only add while on active duty.  Service members may modify or delete the transfer at any time. 

  4. Transfer college credits for evaluation:

    • Printed copy of your class schedule
    • Advisement Transcript
    • Payment receipt / Financial Aid confirmation
    • Certificate of Eligibility / Application Form for Education Benefits

You Must Inform Veterans Affairs If You…..

  • Change your enrollment in any manner
  • Change your program of study

 

Subsequent Semesters:

  •  Inform TCC VA Office of new schedule and intent to use benefits
  • You are responsible for any tuition/fees connected to your account
  • Only classes that apply to your program may be certified. 

 

To Print an Advisement Transcript:

  1. Log into VCCS SIS
  2. On the Self Service page look for "Degree Progress/Graduation"
  3. Under "Degree Progress/Graduation" click on "My Academic Requirements"
  4. On the "My Academic Requirements" page click "View Report as PDF"
    • If you have not previously allowed "pop-ups" a small confirmation will show on the top of the web page in a Firefox browser or at the bottom for Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) browser; allow pop-ups for TCC
    • Click again on "View report as PDF"
  5. A new Window will appear titled "Academic Advising for (Your Name)"
  6. Right click, then click "print"
