What is the conceptual framework for the Child Development Program at TCC?

Our framework reflects NAEYC Core Values and Standards, and our mission: “To prepare students to provide the highest possible standard of care and education, reflecting research-based, best practices in diverse, inclusive programs serving children and families.”  Our framework focus includes the following:

1. Research-based Curriculum - The CHD core curriculum in professional studies includes two components

  • Research-based knowledge and theory to guide practice
  • Practical experiences in the field to ensure that our graduates have the necessary competencies for working with young children in a variety of high quality, diverse and inclusive settings

The core curriculum consists of

  • historical foundations
  • NAEYC professional and ethical standards
  • state standards
  • advocacy
  • child development
  • inclusion
  • developmentally appropriate practice
  • relationships with communities and families
  • child guidance
  • observation techniques
  • child health, nutrition, and safety

Observation and practicum: 144 observation and practicum hours in licensed, STAR Quality or NAEYC-accredited child care settings are required. TCC is committed to ensuring that students have the necessary dispositions, knowledge, and skills to work in inclusive settings

2.  Student Success - The CHD program facilitates student’s success and provides access to numerous TCC support services, including:

  • Placement testing
  • Developmental math, reading and writing courses
  • Tutoring

The Child Provider Scholarship Program pays for all CHD courses for teachers who are currently working in the field and going to college. In addition, students who are employed in QRIS STAR rated programs have access to additional scholarship funds to pursue degrees and certificates.

3. High Quality Teaching – The teaching faculty have diverse backgrounds, are student-centered and build on student’s strengths.  Many hold leadership positions in the community and in professional organizations.  Varied experiences enable our faculty to provide a range of perspectives for our students.

4. Community Involvement - The CHD program at TCC plays an important role in the community, contributing to continuous improvements in the quality of child care in the Eastern Region of Virginia.

5. Continuous Program Assessment and Improvement - Work on our current mission statement and program goals, the basis of our conceptual framework, began in 2004. It is reviewed yearly and modified as appropriate. Our framework is dynamic and responsive to the needs of stakeholders, emerging research, technologies and resources
