TCC EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS:

H1N1 FAQs for students

TCC Alerts Emergency Notification System

H1N1 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: STUDENTS

1.       Will classes be cancelled or campuses closed at TCC?

Tidewater Community College (TCC) is closely monitoring the number of reported cases of flu-like illness among faculty, staff, and students. Any decision to close a campus or suspend classes will be guided by the advice and recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, local health departments, and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

2.       Will TCC announce individual, confirmed cases of H1N1?

TCC will not identify individuals infected with the H1N1 Flu; however, the number of reported cases of flu-like illness among faculty, staff, and students is being closely monitored.

3.       What should students who develop flu-like symptoms do?

In line with the CDC’s recommendations, TCC students with flu-like symptoms should not attend classes and should limit interactions with other people, except to seek medical care, until at least 24 hours after being fever-free (i.e., having a temperature below 100° F [37.8°C]) without the use of fever-reducing medicines. For the most current CDC guidance, go to http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/.

4.       If I miss or stop participating in a class due to my personal flu-like illness

or  to the flu-like illness of a family member for whom I am providing

primary care, will this impact my grade?

Notify a campus provost so that TCC can closely monitor the impact of flu-like illness on its students. Please also work with your instructor to address any absence from class.

5.        If I drop or withdraw from a class, what effect will it have on my financial

           aid and/or scholarship(s)?

Dropping or withdrawing from a class may have an impact on any financial aid or scholarship awarded or anticipated to be awarded. TCC Financial Aid staff will work with you to determine options. For more information, please visit http://www.tcc.edu/students/finaid/StuRespons.htm and/or contact your campus Financial Aid Office.

6.       Can I wear a disposable mask in class?

According to the CDC, the use of facemasks in community and home settings is not generally recommended. For more information, go to http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance_homecare.htm. That said, if you believe that your health is at risk, a disposable mask in class is an option for you. The college does not provide disposable masks.

7.       What happens if my faculty member is too ill to teach?

TCC is carefully monitoring its employee absenteeism rate. If a faculty member becomes ill and is unable to teach, TCC will arrange for a qualified substitute.
