OFFICE HOURS: see attached schedule

This is a developmental course covering second-year algebra, designed to develop the mathematical proficiency necessary for subsequent courses.

The class is five hours of credit not designated for graduation or Dean's List. The grade received in this class is pass (S) or unsatisfactory (U).

Expectations: The student should attain a level of mastery of the material that will ensure a good foundation for subsequent courses. Students that achieve 80% or higher will receive a letter grade S for satisfactory, otherwise the letter grade U for unsatisfactory is given.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

1. Textbook Elementary and Intermediate Algebra by Bittinger/Ellenbogen/Johnson, 1996, Addison-Wesley.

2. Student's Solution Manual by Penna.

3. Graphing or scientific calculator (required).

ADDITIONAL MATERIAL AVAILABLE TO STUDENT

1. Videotapes - available in the LRC, second floor.

2. Interact Math Tutorial Software - available in the Math Lab

3. SUMMIT CD ROM Software

4. TI 82 Graphing calculator available in Math Lab

Student must have a pictured ID to use the above material.

Policies:

1. Attendance is expected and recorded. Attendance may count as a quiz grade. You may be

withdrawn from the course if you have miss 20% of the classes.

2. No make-ups on homework or quizzes will be accepted.

  1. No late homework will be accepted.
  2. If you miss an exam, you may make up the exam prior to the next class meeting provided you have

contacted me.

5. Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating results in automatic zero or dismissal from class.

Grading: the grades will be assigned on the following points:

Tests ....... 600

HW/Q ...... 200 (8 @ 25 pts each)

Final ......... 200

TOTAL ....... 1000

YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST 800 POINTS TO PASS

LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW WITHOUT ACADEMIC PENALTY

A grade of W is awarded to students who withdraw or are withdrawn from a course after the Add/Drop period but prior to the completion of sixty-percent of the session (March 12, 1999). After that time, the student will receive a grade of F except under mitigating circumstances which must be documented. A copy of the documentation must be placed in the student’s academic file.

Students are advised to discuss attendance irregularities with your instructor. Do not simply stop your attendance. You may have mitigating circumstances that would preclude you from receiving a withdrawal grade of F.

STUDENT REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

Once discrepancy reports have been issued, students will not be allowed to remain in class if their names do not appear on the class roster. These students will be asked to provide a current Business Office receipt before being allowed back in class.

Academic Misconduct Policy

Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions:

Faculty Disposition of Academic Misconduct

When a faculty member wishes to process an instance of apparent academic misconduct -- in which the penalty sought is not dismissal from the college -- the faculty member will employ the procedure set forth below.

Faculty members who have reliable evidence of academic misconduct, after they have (1) investigated the matter, and (2) reviewed the facts of the matter and the proposed penalty with the appropriate division chair, may take one or more of the following actions:

If the faculty member chooses to refer the matter to the campus dean or designee for disposition, the Plenary Disciplinary Procedure shall be followed, and dismissal from the college is a possibility.

Students may appeal a faculty penalty through the Student Final Grade Appeal Procedure when a final course grade is involved, or through the Student Grievance Procedure for penalties not involving final course grades.
