INTRODUCTION:

Cooperative Education is an internship program designed for the student who has completed most of their course work for their degree. The internship involves working 90 hours (approx. 6 hours or more a week) without pay in an office setting in any business facility during the semester. The exact schedule for working will be cooperatively worked out between the student and the business office (the assigned supervisor).

OBJECTIVES:

The student, with guidance and help from their work supervisor, will:
  • Demonstrate the skills and judgment necessary to maintain complete confidentiality.
  • Use appropriate attitudes at all times in dealing with clients, co-workers, supervisors, and other professionals.
  • Use language appropriate to a professional office.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Demonstrate appropriate techniques in answering the telephone, making appointments, taking messages, screening calls, making long distance calls and handling emergency calls.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments, and keep the appointment book up to date.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail according to office procedures.
  • File and retrieve files.
  • Open new files.
  • Compose and key short routine letters.
  • Record charges and payments.
  • Learn the end-of-the-day procedures for recording supplies.
  • Prepare forms and related reports.
  • Learn the procedures for reordering supplies.
  • Ask questions when in doubt.
  • Understand the concept of loyalty and demonstrate that a loyal attitude has been internalized.

    RESPONSIBILITY OF THE IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

    The office will designate an individual or individuals to supervise the intern. This supervisor will schedule activities for the intern to achieve the outlined objectives. The supervisor will be responsible for helping the intern to perform the task with acceptable standards and communicate to the student when the assigned tasks are performed adequately or inadequately.

    MATERIALS NEEDED:

    The student will keep a daily journal, which he or she will include in their portfolio.
