The tidal volume waveform is really two events in one graphic representation. Inspiration and expiration. . The inspiratory and expiratory event can be examined by bisecting the volume-time tracing with a vertical line at peak inspiration. Inspiration is illustrated by the triangle on the left and expiration by the triangle on the right.

This length of the base of the inspiratory triangle indicates inspiratory time. The length of the base of the expiratory triangle illustrates the expiratory time. Together they can be used to determine the I: E ratio.
