Attendance Policy
You are required to attend class. Any graded assignments missed will be
recorded as zeros and cannot be made up. This includes announcements,
schedule changes, quizzes, and tests, etc.
Tentative Basis for Determining Final Grade in Biology 221
Field quizzes (each trip - one dropped - no make-ups)
Field Journal (weighted to equal 1 quiz)
The emphasis of these quizzes will be on the recognition of organisms. You
will need to know the scientific name, properly spelled, for each.
GRADING SCALE: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = less than 60
Academic Dishonesty
My policy on cheating and other forms of academic dishonesty will follow the colleges's
guidelines (see your Student Handbook). However, the first step is direct discussions
between the purported offender and myself.

The Journal
The field journal is many things to different scientists. Typically, each daily entry
opens with Time, Location, General weather conditions, and a list of organisms
(with notes). If you are planning on continuing with such studies you may start
to include "Scientific Names". Often this requires entry later when you return
to the lab or home to continue identifying species. At first this seems
cumbersome and antiquated, however, they often contain descriptions and
will identify a single organism as unique in the world. Common names,
although more familiar to us, impart confusion and often vary according to locale.
For example: The "water willow" may be Salix nigra which contains
acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) whereas Decodon verticillata contains toxic
alkyloids. Note that the first name, the genus, is capitalized while the second name,
the species (or specific epithat) is in lower case. Both should be in italics or
underlined.
