French 203, summer 2009
Course
Goals:
When you successfully complete this course, you will be more
proficient in your ability to speak, understand, read and write French,
and you
will know more about French culture.Instructor: Mme. Russell Phone: office: 822-1147 / home: 463-0298 website: http://www.tcc.edu/faculty/webpages/mrussell Office 2405 / classroom 2301 / office hours MWF 10:30-11am instructor’s e-mail: mrussell@tcc.edu Special note: This is a dynamic, fast-paced course. Students should therefore allow at least twice the normal preparation time for each day’s assignment. Required materials: Allons-Y! Bragger and Rice, 6th ed: textbook (packaged with text audio CDs), the lab audio CDs and a French-English dictionary. This course will cover chapters 1-12 with an emphasis on ch. 9-12. Students are encouraged to purchase a set of lab audio CDs but may use the CDs in the library Learning Lab. Students must bring the textbook, all written work to date and a dictionary to each class. The same materials are used for French 101-203. Attendance: Daily attendance and participation in class are essential to your success in this course. If you miss even one day of class, you will miss explanations, supplementary material and oral practice that cannot be gotten on your own from the textbook materials, and your final grade will be adversely affected. Participation: One of the primary objectives in this course is audio-lingual proficiency. Students who are actively present and who make an ongoing, genuine effort to speak French each day in class will therefore earn credit for their oral participation. A student who accrues more than two absences will lose one participation point for each additional absence. Absence policy: Registering for a class is a commitment to attend class. This class meets MWF 8-10:30am from May 18-June 22. There are 15 class meetings. In accordance with the college’s attendance policy, 20% missed classes (more than 2 absences in this course) may result in a faculty-initiated withdrawal. You will receive an F in the course if you withdraw or are withdrawn after June 8th. Tardy / early departure policy: Roll will be taken a few minutes after class begins. Class begins promptly at the scheduled time, and you are expected to be on time. Instructor’s office hours: The instructor will be available immediately after class each day to work with students who would like additional explanation. Homework and quizzes: There will always be a homework assignment which will reinforce and help you practice material covered in class. All assignments will be graded. There will be unannounced quizzes which count as daily grades. Assignments are listed on the course outline and on the instructor’s web page. Any change to an assignment will be announced in class. If you are absent, you should call the instructor or another student to verify the assignment. Upon your return to class, you will be expected to participate in all activities, including quizzes. Written homework is due no later than one class meeting after your return from an absence. If you miss a quiz due to absence, you will receive a zero. Preparation of assignments: Written work must be done neatly and legibly. No credit will be given for illegible answers. Please note that all handouts are available on the instructor’s web page and that students have the option of completing work on a word processor. Late homework policy: Homework is to be prepared, as assigned, for each class meeting and may not be turned in late unless you were absent the previous class. If you were absent, your work must be turned in no later than one class meeting after your return from the absence. Organization of class notes and handouts: An orderly system for keeping class notes and handouts is essential to doing well in any class. Students should keep their notes and handouts for each chapter in order in a notebook or folder and to bring all materials to class each day. Tests: A test must be taken on the day it is assigned unless illness or other serious mitigating circumstances make it impossible for you to come to class. You must call or notify the instructor no later than the day of the test and receive permission to take the test at another time. If you do not contact the instructor, you will receive a zero or partial credit at the instructor’s discretion. Exceptions: If there are mitigating circumstances which you feel might warrant your turning in work late, missing a test without proper notification or missing more than two class meetings, it is very important to talk to the instructor. You may be asked to complete and turn in a “Petition for Exception to Course Requirements” with supporting documentation for the instructor’s consideration. Audio-visual activities: #1 Audio CD’s: Listening comprehension and speaking practice are very important. The “text audio” CDs are packaged with your textbook. On the “text audio”CDs are dialogues/narratives in the text read aloud in French. You are encouraged to listen to a short segment and practice repeating it out loud, imitating the pronunciation that you hear. Listen and repeat until you can repeat what is said smoothly and with understanding The “lab audio” CDs may be purchased separately or may be used in the library Learning Lab. On the “lab audio”CDs are listening exercises that go with the lab audio CD handout for each chapter. . #2 Videos: If class time allows, you will answer comprehension questions based on videos which we will watch and discuss in class. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the comprehension questions from the instructor and to watch the video in the library Learning Lab. Grading: 90-100 A **You must earn a grade of C or better 80-89 B in order to take French 204. 70-79 C 60-69 D Your final grade will be determined as follows: 60% Test average (3 chapter tests) 30% Daily written work average Daily work includes homework, writing assignments, audio-visual activities and quizzes. 10% Oral participation Special Needs: Students with special needs are encouraged to speak to the instructor at the beginning of the course so that any necessary accommodations can be made. Academic Misconduct: Evidence of cheating will result in a zero for the work and referral to the Dean of the Academic Division. Catalog/Handbook: Each student is responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the TCC College Catalog and Student Handbook.
