    Course Description: Intermediate French 204
     Summer 2008
    Instructor: Mme. Russell (office 2405)
    Phone: (Office) 822-1147 /  (Home) 463-0298
    webpage: www.tcc.edu/faculty/webpages/mrussell
Office hours: MWF 10:30-11:30am and by appt.
    Instructor’s e-mail: mrussell@tcc.edu

Course Goals: In French 204, students are introduced to fictional characters typical of people living in different francophone places all over the world.  The course also offers a review of the grammar covered in the previous three semesters, as well as an introduction to more advanced grammar structures. Short works of French literature in the original, an occasional film, textbook and audio narratives and material found on the Web provide a springboard for class discussions and short compositions in French.  The class will be conducted in French except for explanations of grammar. Students who successfully complete this course will be more proficient in their ability to speak, understand, read and write French and will know more about francophone cultures.

Special note:  This is a dynamic, fast-paced course.  Students should therefore allow at least twice the normal preparation time for each day’s assignment.

Instructor’s office hours:  The instructor will be available immediately after class each day to work with students who would like additional explanation.

Materials: Personnages, third edition, by Oates and Dubois, packaged with two audio CDs, Houghton Mifflin Co, 2003.  A French-English dictionary is also required.

Attendance:  Daily attendance and oral participation in this course are of utmost importance.    If you miss even one day of class, it will be very difficult to make up the practice, explanations and discussions you have missed, and your final grade will be adversely affected.

Absence policy:   Registering for a class is a commitment to attend class. French 204 will meet MWF 8-10:40am.  There are 215 class meetings.  In accordance with the college’s attendance policy, 20% missed classes (more than 2 absences in this course) may result in a faculty-initiated withdrawal.  You will receive a WF in the course if you withdraw or are withdrawn after July 14th.

Tardy / early departure policy:  Roll will be taken a few minutes after class begins.   Class begins promptly at the scheduled time, and you are expected to be on time.

Homework and quizzes:  Careful preparation of daily assignments is crucial to your success in this course.  Your final grade is the cumulative average of all daily oral and written grades. There will be occasional, unannounced quizzes.
If you are absent, you should call the instructor or another student to verify the assignment.  Upon your return to class, you will be expected to participate in all activities, including quizzes.   Written homework is due no later than one class meeting after your return from an absence.   If you miss a quiz due to absence,  you will receive a zero.

Late homework policy:   Homework is to be prepared, as assigned, for each class meeting and may not be turned in late unless you were absent the previous class.  If you were absent, your work must be turned no later than one class meeting after your return from an absence.

Preparation of written assignments: Written work should be done neatly and legibly.  No credit will be given for illegible answers.  Please note that all handouts may be copied from the instructor’s web page.  Writing assignments are to be done on a word processor so that they can be easily revised.

Exceptions:  If there are mitigating circumstances which you feel might warrant your turning in work late or missing more than two class meetings, it is very important to talk to the instructor.  You may be asked to complete and turn in a “Petition for Exception to Course Requirements” with supporting documentation for the instructor’s  consideration.

    Audio-visual activities:
Audio CD:   You will be assigned written comprehension questions based on specific listening exercises on the audio CDs which were packaged with your textbook.  You will then use the information gotten from listening to participate in class discussions.
Videos:   Several videos related to the material we are discussing will be shown and discussed in class.

    Word processing and Internet requirements:
Using a word processor to write and revise writing assignments and searching for information on the Internet are integral parts of the French program.  Handouts are available on the instructor’s web page.

    Grading:    90-100   A
                        80-89    B
                        70-79    C
                        60-69    D
Your final grade is the cumulative average of all daily oral and written grades.

Special Needs:   Students with special needs are encouraged to speak to the instructor at the beginning of the course so that any necessary accommodations can be made.

Academic Misconduct: Evidence of cheating will result in a zero for the work and referral to the Dean of the Academic Division.

Catalog/Handbook:   Each student is responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the TCC College Catalog and Student Handbook.
