Course Objectives: This course is designed
to serve as a general introduction to modern statistics for students in all
academic areas. It should acquaint the student with the fundamental language
and concepts of probability and statistics, with emphasis on using the
calculator and computer tools.
Instructional Materials:
1. New Textbook: Introductory Statistics, 7th edition, by Neil A. Weiss
with CourseCompass Access Code(MyMathLab Access Code)
2. Calculator: Each student must have a calculator with
statistical keys. (TI 83/84 recommended)
3. Computer Aids: Computer software Minitab is available for use in the Math
Lab and can be rented for home use for about $30 a semester from http://www.minitab.com/education/.
Policies:
1. Attendance is expected and recorded. You may be withdrawn from this course
once you have missed 20% of the classes.
2. Proficiency in statistics is gained by working problems. Appropriate
problem assignments on
current material will be given at the lecture. Ideally, these assignments
should be done and
completed before the next lecture.
3. Be prepared for class. Bring your text, calculator, and all assigned work
from previous class.
4. Cheating on a test is an automatic zero for that test. Students are
responsible for being aware or policies, procedures, and student
responsibilities contained within the current edition of the Tidewater Community
College Catalog and Student Handbook.
5. Students not on roster will not be allowed to attend class.
Tests: Four in-class exams and a comprehensive
final will be given. The lowest grade of the first four exams will be
dropped. There will be no make-up tests. Tests will be announced at
least a week in advance.
Computer Assignments: Five computer assignments
using minitab must be completed during the course of the semester worth
a total of 100 points. Computer assignments are worth 20 points each.
MyMathLab Homework: Graded computer homework
is given throughout the semester using CourseCompass.
Grading: Course grades will be based
on a total of 600 points as follows:
Tests and Final...........................................................
400 points
Computer Assignments..............100 points
MyMathLab Homework............100points

W Withdrew. "A grade of W is awarded to students who withdraw
or are withdrawn from a course after the Add/Drop period but prior to
the completion of sixty percent of the session ( 10 weeks). After that
time, the student will receive a grade of F except under mitigating
circumstances, which must be documented. A copy of the documentation
must be placed in the student's academic file."
Attendance may be used to decide borderline grade.
