Uploading Your Webpages

When uploading your webpages you have three options to choose from.

  1. FTP upload
  2. Through the network
  3. Directly through me

FTP

File Tansfer Protocol, FTP is one of the most commonly used methods to transfer (upload and dowload) material off of the internet. The nice thing about FTP is that it can be done on any computer whether it is at home or work provided that you have a FTP program. There are many free FTP programs on the market right now. These include:

CoffeCup FTP

SmartFTP

WinFTP

With these programs there are three key component that are needed to be able to upload your webpages.

  1. Host Name - the host name for ALL Faculty Webpages is www.tcc.edu
  2. Host Directory - this is the location of you faculty folder on the server. ALL faculty directories will follow this address with the exception of the folder name. Replace MSkipper with the folder that will be assigned to you.
    My host directory is:
  3. \\tccweb\data\WEB\htdocs\faculty\webpages\MSKIPPER
Again replace my folder name with your folder name.

**if this does not work in the host directory replace

    \\tccweb\data\WEB\htdocs\faculty\webpages\MSKIPPER
    with
    faculty/webpages/MSkipper/

  4. Username - the username is your full context signon preceded by a period. To find out what your context is you can use the address book in Groupwise. You will need to right click on the heading columns and add eDirectory Distinguished Name to the list of columns to be displayed. Be sure to precede it with a period.
  5. For example, my user name to access my web folder via FTP is
    .tcskipw.staff.ches.tcc

  6. Password - your password is the password that you use to sign onto the network.

If the option for passive FTP is available click it as it will not run into errors is there is a firewall on your system.

Local/Network

With a local/network set-up you must be careful. Unlike and FTP program, a local/network is a direct connection to your folder. Once you save your webpage it will automatically save it on the server.

To set-up a local/network on your computer follw these steps.

  1. From your desktop
  2. Right click the Big Novel "N" in the
  3. Select Novell Map Network Drive... view example.
  4. Leave the map drive letter chosen by Novell. H: is the example. Note your assigned drive letter may be different.
  5. "Enter the Network path to the resource:"
\\TCCWEB\DATA\ web\htdocs\faculty\webpages\MSkipper (remover MSkipper and replace it with your folder name)
  6. Check the "check to make folder appear as top most level" and "check to always map this drive letter when you start windows" options
  7. Click "Map"
  8. Your mapped drive window will appear.
