Students must understand  that used books  which  have been written in will NOT BE ACCEPTABLE FOR CLASS. Students who come to class with a book that has been written in w ill be asked to return to the bookstore to buy another clean copy. 

 

Course Prerequisites: Satisfactory grade in ESL 05 or Placement Test.

Course Description: ESL 06 is designed for students who need additional practice in   English language use and reading strategies  in order to meet the challenge of  college-level reading requirements.

Course Objectives:  At the end of this course students will be able to apply a variety of  reading strategies to college-level reading material. Students will be able to understand  a new vocabulary word using both context clues, grammatical structures,  and  the English system of prefix, affix, suffix and stem words.  Students will be able to recognize descriptive writing, arguments, evidence, bias, and inferences as well as determine a cause and effect relationship.

Course Content: Class time will be spent in a variety of activities. During class we will work extensively in the textbook and review homework assignments. Students will also complete a fiction reading assignment and a vocabulary development  project.


Method of Evaluation:  There will be the following graded assignments in ESL 6:

          Assignment:                           To receive an S (satisfactory) in ESL  6 :

 Three Reading Skills Tests               Students must maintain an average of 80

                                                         on these three tests. Dictionaries are not allowed.

  Six Reading Assignments                Students must maintain an average of 80

                                                          on these six reading assignments.  Three are

                                                          completed in the classroom

 Vocabulary Project                          Students must complete Part One and Part Two

                                                          of this project with a minimum grade of 80 

  

 Fiction Reading Assignment 

& Book Conference.                         Students must complete this assignment

                                                           with a minimum grade of 80.

 Final  Exam                                      Students must pass the final exam with a

                                                          minimum grade of 80.

 

If a student does not meet the above criteria, the student will receive a grade of R (Re-Enroll) or U (Unsatisfactory).

 

Students are responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures, and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the Tidewater Community College Catalog and Student handbook. Students  should familiarize themselves with the College’s policies regarding academic misconduct and inclement weather policies found in the Student handbook section of the catalogue.

Plagiarism is the intentional or accidental use of another person’s words or ideas as your own. Cheating involves copying another person’s homework, looking at another person’s exam, test, or quiz, or using unauthorized notes while taking a quiz, exam, test or writing an in-class writing assignment. Students who cheat or plagiarize will receive a failure in the class.

 

Attendance: If you miss more than 20% of scheduled class time, (more than 6 classes), you will receive a U. Arriving late and/or leaving early is considered one-half an absence.  Students are responsible for work missed due to an absence.  When you are absent, you should contact a classmate or your instructor  to find out what was missed and/or assigned.


Learning Resources: Students will be encouraged through out the semester to use the resources available in the Learning Resource Center.  The Language Lab on the second floor of the Bayside Building is especially helpful for ESL students. ESL students should also avail themselves of extra help available in the Open ESL Lab on Thursday from 1230 -120.

Special Needs: If you have special needs because of a documented disability or medical condition, please  feel free to discuss this with your instructor during her office  hours.

REMINDER:    Grading Criteria

Three Reading Skills Tests  (Weeks  3, 8, 12)

      Students must have an average of 80 on the three reading skills tests to pass ESL 6.

Six Reading Assignments   (Week 2,      ( Week 4 w/ in class quiz) ,

                                              Week 7,     ( Week  9 w/in class quiz),

                                              Week  11,  ( Week 13 w/in class quiz)

     Students must have an average of 80 on the six reading assignments to pass ESL 6.

Vocabulary Development Project

        Assigned Week One

         Due Week 14

       Students must hand in a completed vocabulary development project

        in order to pass ESL 6.

Book Conference (Reading for Pleasure)

       The grading criteria for the Reading for Pleasure/Book Conference Assignment will  

       be given to students  at the end of Week Five.  Students must conference with their

       instructor as part of this assignment. Conferences can be scheduled once the student

       has completed the book. The last week for conferences is Week 15.

Final Exam

   Students must pass the final exam with a grade no lower than 80.  The final exam will 

   be in two parts: a longer reading with questions  (students may use the dictionary) and 

   a vocabulary development  section (students may  not use the dictionary).
