Course Prerequisites : Satisfactory grade in ESL 02 or Placement Test.

Course Description : ESL 07 is designed for students who need to improve speaking and listening skills in order to be both competent and comfortable communicating in the classroom. The course will focus on four areas: pronunciation, speaking, and listening skills.

Course Objectives :

Pronunciation     Students will study the pronunciation system of English and be able to pronounce vowels and consonants with near native-like accuracy. Students will also incorporate into their speech English intonation patterns, stress patterns, and   thought groups. Student will also become familiar with reductions and contractions.

Speaking      Students will be able to give a short presentation and participate in both small-group and large-group discussions.

Listening       Students will understand short presentations, take notes while listening to a presentation, and summarize a presentation from their written notes.

Course Content : Class time will be divided between speaking and listening activities, with a heavier emphasis on the pronunciation of English. Listening exercises will vary between tapes, videos, and presentations in class. During class, we will work with both textbooks, in both small and large group formats, as well as class discussions.

Method of Evaluation :   Students will take a quiz each week on the listening material covered in Take on Listening .    Each week students also will be assigned a passage from Phrase by Phrase   to record on a cassette tape. This tape will be handed in and graded by your instructor. The specific grading criteria   for each tape will be given to the students with each weekly assignment.   Students will also give   two short presentations ( 3 - 5 minutes) in the course of the semester.

Students are responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures, and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the Tidewater Community College Catalog and Student handbook. Students   should familiarize themselves with the College's policies regarding academic misconduct and inclement weather policies found in the Student handbook section of the catalogue.

Plagiarism is the intentional or accidental use of another person's words or ideas as your own. Cheating involves copying another person's homework, looking at another person's exam, test, or quiz, or using unauthorized notes while taking a quiz, exam, test or writing an in-class writing assignment. Students who cheat or plagiarize will receive a failure in the class.

Attendance: If you miss more than 20% of scheduled class time, you will receive a U. Arriving late (after roll is taken) is considered one-half an absence.   Students are responsible for work missed due to an absence.   When you are absent, you should contact your instructor at sboland@tcc.edu to find out what was missed and/or assigned.

Learning Resources: Students will be encouraged through out the semester to use the resources available in the Learning Resource Center (LRC).   The Language Lab on the second floor of the Bayside Building (LRC)   is especially helpful for ESL students. Pronunciation Power , a computer program that assists students with improving pronunciation skills, is an excellent resource which students can use in the LRC. Please ask your instructor for more details on how to use this excellent resource.

Special Needs : If you have special needs because of a documented disability or medical condition, please   feel free to discuss this with your instructor during her office   hours.

Final Grade : To receive an S (Satisfactory) in this class, students must maintain an 80% average on all assignments, including quizzes, recordings, and presentations.    If a student does not meet the above criteria, the student will receive a grade of R (Re-Enroll) or U (Unsatisfactory).
