Course Prerequisites : Satisfactory grade in ESL 11 or Placement Test.

Course Description : ESL 12 is designed to provide further instruction and practice in the writing process.   Students will study advanced grammar including the perfect tenses, passive voice, modals, adjective clauses, noun clauses and complex sentence structure. ESL 12 also includes writing fully-developed paragraphs as well as an introduction to the short essay.

Course Objectives :   At the end of this course students will be able to write a well-structured paragraph.   The short essay will include an introductory paragraph, a developed body paragraph, and a paragraph which serves as a conclusion .   Sentence structure will be varied and will include compound and complex sentence structures. Furthermore, there will be very few ESL errors, such as misuse of articles, prepositions, verb tense/form, and idiomatic expressions.

Course Content :   Students will write a paragraph as a regular weekly assignment.   If we have been studying grammar that week, the paragraph   will demonstrate competence in that grammar area. If we have been studying a method of development for a paragraph, the weekly writing assignment will follow that method of development while at the same time using good grammar. The specific grading criteria will be given with each weekly writing assignment.

Method of Evaluation :   Students are expected to participate in all classroom activities. Each weekly writing assignment will be graded; opportunities for revision are limited. For example, in-class writing assignments may not be revised for a higher grade.      Students will also be quizzed regularly on their ability to proofread a paragraph. Finally, students should note that l ate papers will not be accepted.

Students are responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures, and student responsibilities contained within the current edition of the Tidewater Community College Catalog and Student handbook. Students   should familiarize themselves with the College's policies regarding academic misconduct and inclement weather policies found in the Student handbook section of the catalogue.

Plagiarism is the intentional or accidental use of another person's words or ideas as your own. Cheating involves copying another person's homework, looking at another person's exam, test, or quiz, or using unauthorized notes while taking a quiz, exam, test or writing an in-class writing assignment. Students who cheat or plagiarize will receive a failure in the class.

Attendance: If you miss more than 20% of scheduled class time, you will receive a U. Arriving late (after roll is called) is considered one-half an absence.   Students are responsible for work missed due to an absence.   When you are absent, you should your instructor at sboland@tcc.edu to find out what was missed and/or assigned.

Learning Resources: Students will be encouraged throughout the semester to use the resources available in the Learning Resource Center.   The Writing Center on the second floor of the Bayside building is especially helpful for ESL students. Furthermore, there are numerous websites, such as www.usingEnglish.com , which students will find very helpful.

Special Needs : If you have special needs because of a documented disability or medical condition, please   feel free to discuss this with your instructor during her office   hours.

Final Grade : To receive an S (Satisfactory) in this class, students must maintain an 80% average on weekly writing assignments. Students must write passing papers, 80% or above, for both the midterm and the final.    If a student does not meet this above criteria, the student will receive a grade of R (Re-Enroll) or U (Unsatisfactory).
