Convocation 2011: President DiCroce Opens TCC’s 44th Year

TCC President Deborah M. DiCroce welcomed nearly 700 faculty and staff members at the annual convocation, held Aug. 16 at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center. Her comprehensive State of the College Address followed an informative video profiling new employees and job changes at TCC.

Presenting myriad updates on the college’s growth, rankings, successes and challenges, DiCroce reported another record-breaking year for enrollment – up 5.6 percent in FTES and annual headcount of nearly 46,000. TCC expects to see another
5 percent growth, approaching 50,000 students in 2011-12.

Highlights noted by the president included a Post 9/11 GI Bill enrollment hike of 95 percent in FTES from last year, with 4,106 students. Not to mention tremendous success in capital projects underway and completed – from the new Fred W. Beazley Portsmouth Campus opened last year to the Regional Health Professions Center opening for fall classes.

Among challenges TCC faces, stand-outs remain the end of federal stimulus funds and a loss of 28 percent of the General Fund portion of TCC’s budget, or $14 million. Still, TCC continues to rise to the mission of open access and quality education, awarding nearly 3,600 degrees and certificates last year – an 11.3 percent increase.
