TCC’s first student center opens

With the start of summer semester, TCC opened the Norfolk Campus Student Center, offering tours and introductory activities that packed the highly anticipated facility. The first of its kind in the commonwealth, the center offers comprehensive amenities – from student leadership, study and meeting spaces to child minding to food vendors to recreational sports and media entertainment. Update: Fall semester brings students back for activities galore.

Open every day but Sunday, the five-story center includes a ground-level plaza with an outdoor gathering and dining area, as well as a public-access walkway to Granby Street and Monticello Avenue.

The five-story, 55,000 square-foot center, located at 310 Granby St., serves some 15,000 students enrolled at the Norfolk Campus. Student centers are underway for each of TCC’s campuses; all are expected to open by January 2013.

The new student center features numerous study and meeting rooms and Wi-Fi throughout the building.
During opening week, May 23-27, the center hosted daily activities, from musical offerings to fitness-training sessions.

The week also included game-show-style fun with students and deans matching their wits during a
"Are you smarter than your dean?" contest.

Making their mark, students signed a commemorative banner in a first-floor gathering space.

Students also got their hands dirty planting flowers during a “plant your pot” session.
