All TCC students planning to take Biology 141 Human Anatomy & Physiology during the fall 2013 and all subsequent semesters must first pass NAS 2, Foundations of Life Sciences, as a prerequisite.

Currently, all campuses offer NAS 2, which presents biological and chemical principles for allied health students. Students must achieve a grade of 70 or better in the eight-week, two-credit class to enroll in Biology 141.

“By introducing this prerequisite, we’re improving student success,” said Mike Williams, a biology instructor at the Portsmouth Campus. “This class gives them the information and the tools they need to better succeed when they do take 141.”

Williams urges students who want to enroll in Biology 141 this fall to add NAS 2 to their spring or summer schedules.

Students can also place directly into BIO 141 through one of two methods. Students can sign up to take the challenge exam, a multiple-choice test that covers the topics of NAS 2. The challenge exam will be offered at all campuses at the end of the summer and at the beginning of the fall semester.

Students who have completed BIO 1, BIO 100 or BIO 101 in the past three years with a grade of C or higher can request a waiver for NAS 2. Before seeking the waiver, students should be prepared to show evidence they have attained equivalent knowledge and skills through alternative programs and/or courses by providing academic transcripts to the appropriate contact for each TCC campus.
