An educator for 30 years, Joe Antinarella has taught English and writing at the secondary, postsecondary and postgraduate levels. His experience includes co-directing the Tidewater Writing Project and teaching writing at Norway’s Bodo Graduate School of Business and conversational English, practical writing and communication skills at the Baltic States Technical University in St. Petersburg, Russia. A published author, Antinarella co-wrote Tried and True, a text focusing on strategies and methods for teaching writing. The 2006 publication, The Subject is Writing, Essays by Teachers and Students, includes his chapter on strategies and methods for teaching writing. Antinarella holds a B.A. in English from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an M.A. in liberal studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. |

Gary Cross became the inaugural TCC Batten Fellow, announced in fall 2008, with a project to develop the first-ever commercial medical simulations for respiratory therapy, in partnership with Sentara Health. Using high fidelity medical simulation and the human patient simulator, Cross provides quality instruction and hands-on training for TCC’s respiratory therapy students. As program lead, he maintains a strong working knowledge of state regulations and accepted practices. Cross joined TCC in 1989 as a full-time faculty member, after graduating from the respiratory therapy program himself and practicing in the field for several years. Cross will soon complete a master’s in instructional technology from Virginia Tech. |

An award-winning artist, he has taught at renowned glass-making centers including Rochester Institute of Technology and Pilchuck Glass School, and launched the glass program at the Indianapolis Art Center. At TCC since 2005, Francis has expanded the Studio Glass program, which offers traditional glass blowing with molten glass along with the study of glass as art, exploring both sculptural and functional forms. Francis holds a B.S. in fine and applied arts from Southern Connecticut State University and a M.F.A. with specialization in glass from Kent State University. A scholar of American Jewish history, Leah Hagedorn has held positions as a lecturer at Princeton University and visiting assistant professor of history at Tulane University. Prior to joining TCC in 2004, she directed a public history project at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at University of Mississippi. Hagedorn earned a B.A. in history from Goucher College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in history, both from the University of North Carolina. Her doctoral dissertation, Jews and the American South, 1858-1905, explores the Jewish experience unique to the American South. |

This highly prized peer award established by the TCC faculty recognizes excellence in teaching. She has published articles in international journals on Mongolian literature, Turkish dialects, ESL pedagogy and the history of American English. A former Fulbright scholar in Turkey, she is also an award-winning photographer and avid quilter. Using the LabVIEW operating system, Koon designed innovative software to bring cutting-edge virtual technology to the college’s electronic engineering technology program. Bill Marcil’s 19 years as a registered occupational therapist include professional work in hospitals, hospice and clinical settings providing occupational therapy services for adults with physical disabilities, injuries and terminal illnesses. After joining TCC in 2003, Marcil expanded the college’s occupational therapy assistant program from a one-year certificate to an associate of applied science and increased enrollment by 26 percent during his first year. He continues to expand program offerings while coordinating curriculum development, as well as teaching, counseling and advising students. Marcil’s published works include the book titles Occupational Therapy: What it is and How it Works, Terminal and Life Threatening Illness: an Occupational Behavior Approach, The Person with AIDS: a Personal and Professional Perspective and Caring for Someone in Your Home. Elected a fellow of the Virginia Academy of Science and appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine to the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum of Virginia, Jim O’Brien has taught psychology at TCC for 35 years. In 2007, the Virginia Community College System named O’Brien the inaugural recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Working with several teams of students since 1998, he debunked the long-standing view of social psychology that women conform more than men in response to group pressure. The research teams have presented their developing empirical findings several times to the Virginia Academy of Science, and O’Brien has made presentations to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Psychological Science and the Virginia Psychological Association. He teaches research methods, social psychology, child psychology, human relations and psychology of management. The TCC Faculty Senate awarded him with its 2007 Professor of the Year Award in recognition of his teaching excellence. O’Brien holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of Richmond, an M.S. in general applied psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D. in human factors psychology from The Catholic University of America. |

Ann Pinkerton’s 15 years of medical research have focused on the cellular and molecular changes associated with cancer, genetics, cardiovascular transplantation and cellular differentiation. Her extensive clinical, research and teaching experience includes over five years in open-heart and transplant surgery at the Medical College of Virginia and in the cardiac catheterization lab at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Prior to joining TCC, Pinkerton taught biology at the State University of New York (SUNY), and advanced cell biology to graduate students and immunology to medical students at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). She earned her B.S. in biology at the College of William and Mary, her M.A. at SUNY and a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences at EVMS. |

Founding dean of TCC’s division of health sciences, Linda M. Rice served as director of respiratory care at Maryview Hospital prior to joining the college in 1977. At TCC, she has served as program director for respiratory therapy, chair of the academic division for health science technologies and special assistant to the president for military affairs and community outreach, before becoming vice president for workforce development where she honed her skills in partnership building. Rice holds a B.A. from Randolph Macon Woman’s College and an M.S. in adult education and a Ph.D. in urban services from Old Dominion University. After retiring from the Navy, Calvin Scheidt joined the TCC faculty as instructor of the Homeport Training Program at Fleet Training Center in Norfolk where he taught a variety of supply subjects at the Navy “C” school. In 2000 he was promoted to the position of supply department head and later became director of government programs. He serves as associate vice president for military programs. Scheidt directs and teaches strategy and policy for the Naval War College, Fleet Seminar Program, business management and political science for several local universities and colleges. Scheidt holds an M.P.A. (public administration) from Troy State University and a Ph.D. in political science from Columbus University. |

He teaches computer-aided drafting with AutoCAD, parametric solid modeling with Autodesk, principles of occupational safety, blueprint reading, engineering drawing and computer applications for technicians. He works with numerous companies in Hampton Roads to develop and teach a wide range of courses. Tharp has written articles published in the Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching and in the Virginia Mathematics Teacher. In 1997, she received the William Lowery Outstanding Mathematics Teacher Award for college-level teaching from the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and in 2002 TCC recognized her with an Outstanding Achievement Award for developing online math courses and grant work. Tharp’s interests include developmental mathematics, math anxiety, cognitive learning styles, diagnostic teaching, at-risk students, study skills, graphing calculators, technology, grant writing, teacher education and the Internet. David Wright joined TCC in 1974 as professor of physics, teaching general college physics, university physics, astronomy and conceptual physics. In 2002, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia awarded him one of only 11Outstanding Faculty Awards. Wright served as science consultant and script writer for the NASA Science Files television show and also performs physics demonstrations at theme parks that include Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and Tampa Bay. He writes physics workbooks for Busch Gardens, Sea World, Water Country USA and Adventure Island. Wright holds a B.S. and M.A. in physics from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in physics from Virginia Tech. |
