Elected a fellow of the Virginia Academy of Science and appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine to the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum of Virginia, Jim O’Brien has taught psychology at TCC for 35 years. In 2007, the Virginia Community College System named O’Brien the inaugural recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Working with several teams of students since 1998, he debunked the long-standing view of social psychology that women conform more than men in response to group pressure. The research teams have presented their developing empirical findings several times to the Virginia Academy of Science, and O’Brien has made presentations to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Psychological Science and the Virginia Psychological Association. He teaches research methods, social psychology, child psychology, human relations and psychology of management. The TCC Faculty Senate awarded him with its 2007 Professor of the Year Award in recognition of his teaching excellence. O’Brien holds a B.A. in psychology from the University of Richmond, an M.S. in general applied psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D. in human factors psychology from The Catholic University of America. |
