Professor of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Special Achievement

Peter Shaw

SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (June 17, 2011) – Tidewater Community College announces recognition of three of its own with annual special awards that honor the quality and achievements of select faculty and staff from across its four campuses.

Professor of the Year Award – Norfolk resident Peter Shaw, professor of business and economics, received this peer award established by the TCC Faculty Senate to recognize teaching excellence. In his classes, Shaw emphasizes critical thinking skills to enhance student learning. Bringing the real world to students, he includes current economic events to demonstrate key points such as the impact of the recession on American families. He also emails students a global update that includes the week’s business happenings, all pertinent to their course material. Reflecting real-world practices, Shaw works closely with audiovisual services to incorporate new learning technology into his courses including LCD projectors and SMART screen technology.

Administrator of the Year Award – Virginia Beach resident Greg Frank, dean of mathematics and sciences at the Virginia Beach Campus, received this award in recognition of leadership contributions that advance the college’s mission and goals. A dedicated staff member for 30 years, Frank joined TCC as a biology instructor and became dean six years later. A tireless advocate for the new Science Building at the Virginia Beach Campus, he oversaw the transition into the new facility through myriad moving-in challenges, working diligently to meet faculty needs. Colleagues describe Frank as a team player, role model, morale booster, advocate and friend. He is an effective leader who supports the college’s core values.

Special Achievement Award – Virginia Beach resident Gary Noah, professor of information systems technology, received this peer award from the TCC Faculty Senate to recognize accomplishments that go above and beyond the call of duty. Seeing a student need and meeting it head-on, Noah launched the Computers for Student Success program with the TCC Computer Club in late 2009. Since then Noah and club members have distributed over 400 re-furbished home computers to students in need. Under Noah’s direction, club members work diligently to clean and repair donated systems and teach recipients how to use and care for them. The effort gives TCC students the opportunity to hone troubleshooting and repair skills, while providing an invaluable service for students.
