JSTP Cited for Innovative Approach by National Alliance
TCC’s Job Skills Training Program (JSTP) was named a Program of Distinction by the National Alliance of Community and Technical Colleges.
Selected for its innovative approach to job-readiness training and employment for low-income and welfare participants, JSTP was one of six featured programs during the Alliance’s 2008 conference.
JSTP provides guaranteed full-time jobs with benefits and upward mobility for those who successfully complete the program. Employer partners like Bank of America, Advanced Services Inc., GEICO, Portfolio Recovery and Sentara Life Care guarantee full-time positions to program graduates and contribute financial support for the program.
In addition, community agencies including the Virginia Department of Social Services, One-Stop Workforce Center and domestic violence and homeless shelters create a vault of resources that contribute to the success of students in the training program.
Conducted within a work-simulated environment, the three-month program runs daily during the work week. JSTP training includes computer skills, workplace values and attitudes, conflict resolution, team building and communication skills, as well as specific employer-driven job-skills training.
Since its start, JSTP has helped nearly 900 people with significant barriers to employment get jobs and become self-sufficient.
