STEP III:  EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION

The final step in the Career Development process is to develop the self marketing materials (resumes, cover letters, thank you letters) and skills (dressing for success, networking and interviewing) that are necessary parts of a job search.

SELF-MARKETING MATERIALS

 

  • Cover Letters - A good cover letter can be the key to getting an interview.  It can "sell" the employer on the idea of reading your resume and giving you an interview.  Cover letters should always accompany a resume and should always be tailored to the employer you are sending it to.
  • Resumés - A resume speaks for you and should include your objective, relevant work experience, education and training.
  • Thank you Letters - After your interview you have another opportunity to sell yourself to the employer.  The follow-up thank you letter can set you apart from the other candidates by showing continued interest and enthusiasm for the job.  It also allows you to present relevant information that may have been missed during the interview.

 

SELF-MARKETING SKILLS

 

  • Dressing for Success - As a rule, you should dress better for an interview than you would for a normal work day. The more administrative the position, the better the attire, regardless of industry.  In most cases, keep it dark and neutral black, navy, dark gray).  Keep it simple with minimal jewelry and accessories.  Avoid using colognes or perfumes.  Avoid smoking and eating foods such as garlic for several hours prior to the interview.  Make sure your hair and nails are neat and clean.  Your appearance is the first impression that you make so make it a good one.
  • Informational Interviewing - One of the best ways to learn about an industry is to interview people in the field.  You initiate the interview.  It's purpose is to obtain information, not a job. In addition to learning more about the field, you are establishing contacts who will become part of your job search network.
  • Interviewing - Preparation is critical.  Whether you get the job can depend on how well you represent yourself.  You will be more relaxed and confident if you are properly prepared.
  • Networking   - Companies tend to recognize that they need to hire someone long before they create a formal job specification and resort to classified ads, the Internet, or a recruiter to bring in candidates.  At this stage they begin asking informally if anyone they know is aware of someone who would be a good fit for the position.  If you have already begun networking with people in your chosen field, you are in a position to be recommended before the position is ever advertised. A company's current employees are among the best sources of referrals. Begin the networking process and you will be in the best position to get a job.

 

SALARY CALCULATORS

 

You should not discuss salary and benefits during an interview.  However, you should have an understanding of the typical salary in the field and region where you are interviewing so that you will be prepared to discuss it when you are offered a position.
