Career DEvelopment

Career development is a lifelong process.  The experience of choosing a career or major varies from person to person.  For some, the choices appear to be obvious.  For others, considerable time, thought and effort go into the process.  The Career Decision Making Model, which was adapted from Don Schutt's "Three Critical Questions", is designed to assist you in planning and developing your career.  For those desiring assistance in answering these questions, please visit a Counselor or the Student Employment Services Office.

Career Decision making MODEL

sTEP oNE:  WHO AM I? The most important step in the career decision making process is learning more about yourself, including your values, personality, interests and skills.  Following is a list of resources to assist you in answering this question.

STEP TWO:  WHERE AM I GOING? After determining what careers are most appropriate for you based on the prior assessments, it is important to research these options and select a career or careers to pursue.  The following sites will provide detailed information about these career options, including education and degree requirements, labor market projections, salary trends, advancement potential and the daily activities involved in each career choice.

Step Three:  HOW DO I GET THERE? The final step in the decision making model is to develop a Career Action Plan.  After you have chosen a career path, you must consider the following:

  • What are the real and perceived obstacles?
  • What are my strategies for overcoming these obstacles?
  • What are the skills I need to develop?
  • What colleges provide the education necessary to pursue this career?
  • What are the employment opportunities in this field?

After answering these questions, you can develop specific actions to respond to them.
