Frequently Asked Questions

Should You Take an Online Class?

How can you tell whether online classes are right for you?

In addition to fulfilling the Technical Requirements and Skills and carefully reviewing What Is an Online Class at TCC and Strategies for Success in Online Classes, you can visit the following Websites (recommended by TCC online faculty) to help determine if you have the motivation, discipline, time, and study skills that support distance learning in general, online learning in particular.

Will I be given an e-mail account?

Yes. TCC will provide all registered students a VCCS web email account. All TCC students are required to use their college provided email address as their official email address when corresponding via Email with TCC Faculty & Staff. Students may elect to forward mail (at their own risk) from their official VCCS e-mail account to another (student-selected) e-mail system.

Does TCC Offer an Online Degree?

No, TCC does not currently offer an "Online Degree," but with careful planning a student can obtain a degree with the courses currently offered online at TCC.

TCC offers online (Web-based) classes that can be applied toward the Associate in Science: Social Sciences and other degrees. Eventually, students will be able to complete their course requirements for this degree and others with online classes. Note that many online classes have some off-line requirements such as visiting a library, a community agency, a laboratory, a testing center, or a campus.

Will the courses I take through OnlineLearning transfer?

OnlineLearning courses transfer in the same manner that other traditional TCC courses would. We have an articulation agreement with some local Virginia colleges and universities. For complete transfer information it is best to consult the guidelines for the institution to which you plan to transfer.

Will my personal information be available on the web when I am registered in an online class?

Personal information such as your SS# and home address will not be accessible online by other students but in some courses the other students and possibly the general public would have access to your name and email address.

How do I get information about an online course if the web or blackboard site for the course I am interested is not available yet?

1. Check the course web or blackboard site for the previous semester to get an idea of what the next semester will be like. Note: Some courses have more than one instructor. You should determine who the instructor of the course is for your particular course section.
2. Email or call the professor designated for the course you are interested in. If you are unsure who the course professor is or need the professor's contact information visit the current Online Class Listings page.

Can I enroll for an online class online?

Yes, Online enrollment is now available to most TCC or VCCS students. Other enrollment options.
