| What is an Online Class
at TCC? |
|
| Offered predominantly on the
World Wide Web, TCC online classes are academically equivalent
to face-to-face classes but have few or no face-to-face meetings.
Online classes offer many benefits to disciplined, motivated
students: flexible scheduling, active and interactive learning,
time for reflection, enhanced verbal and computer skills,
and participation in an online learning community.
Online classes that use Bb and other online delivery methods
have the same content and the same academic rigor as their
on-site counterparts. With their alternative access and delivery
media, online classes are particularly valuable for motivated,
disciplined students who cannot easily attend regularly scheduled
on-site classes because of their jobs, their health, or other
obligations.
Typically, students are expected to access the World Wide
Web and e-mail daily or several times a week, to read and
write and participate in other class activities independently
and collaboratively, to meet class deadlines, and to devote
about 4 hours a week for each credit hour (12 hours for a
3-credit class). Some classes include face-to-face meetings
or other offline activities as described on individual class
Web pages.

| Should You Take an Online
Class? |
|
| How can you tell whether online
classes are right for you?
In addition to fulfilling the Technical
Requirements and Skills and carefully reviewing What Is an Online
Class at TCC and
Strategies for Success in Online Classes, you can visit
the following Websites (recommended by TCC online faculty)
to help determine if you have the motivation, discipline,
time, and study skills that support distance learning in general,
online learning in particular.
|
Will
I be given an e-mail account? |
|
| Yes. TCC will provide all registered students
a VCCS
web email account. All TCC students are required to use
their college provided email address as their official email
address when corresponding via Email with TCC Faculty &
Staff. Students may elect to forward mail (at their own risk)
from their official VCCS e-mail account to another (student-selected)
e-mail system. |
| Does TCC Offer an
Online Degree? |
|
| No, TCC does not currently offer
an "Online Degree," but with careful planning a
student can obtain a degree with the courses currently offered
online at TCC.
TCC offers online (Web-based) classes that can be applied
toward the Associate
in Science: Social Sciences and other degrees. Eventually,
students will be able to complete their course requirements
for this degree and others with online classes. Note that
many online classes have some off-line requirements such as
visiting a library, a community agency, a laboratory, a testing
center, or a campus.

in Science: Social Sciences degree and the courses that
were currently available through TCC OnlineLearning as of

| Will the
courses I take through OnlineLearning transfer? |
|
| OnlineLearning courses transfer in
the same manner that other traditional TCC courses would. We
have an articulation agreement with some local Virginia colleges
and universities. For complete transfer information it is best
to consult the guidelines for the institution to which you plan
to transfer. |
| Will my
personal information be available on the web when I am registered
in an online class? |
|
| Personal information such as your
SS# and home address will not be accessible online by other
students but in some courses the other students and possibly
the general public would have access to your name and email
address. |
| How do I
get information about an online course if the web or blackboard
site for the course I am interested is not available yet? |
|
1. Check the course web or blackboard
site for the previous semester to get an idea of what the next
semester will be like. Note: Some courses have more than one
instructor. You should determine who the instructor of the course
is for your particular course section.
2. Email or call the professor designated for the course you
are interested in. If you are unsure who the course professor
is or need the professor's contact information visit the current
Online
Class Listings page. |
| Can
