What
is Supplemental Instruction (SI) ? |
Supplemental Instruction is a program to help students succeed in historically difficult classes. Basically, the program provides a supplemental instructor leader--typically called an SI--to a particular class. The SI leader functions as an embedded tutor of sorts for the class. |
| WHO ARE SI LEADERS ? |
| An SI leader is typically someonewho has already been successful in the class and the professor has asked him/her to help current students do well. Most SI leaders are finishing up their own studies at TCC or Old Dominion. SI leaders receive training on how best to help students and are compensated for their work. |
| WHAT DO SI LEADERS DO ? |
|
| >
Students who enroll in difficult classes that have
an SI Leader are more successful than students in
the same course without an SI Leader |
| > Students
who enroll in classes supported by an SI Leader
and participate regularly in the out-of-class study sessions
held multiple times each week, have a 91% chance
of passing the class |
> Unlike
tutors, SI Leaders are available to help throughout
the week, every week, from the beginning of the
semester |
| >You will meet friends that you will continue to study with for other classes throughout your time at TCC and beyond.. |
