What can I expect on the test?
The test includes items that test your knowledge of
- Fractions
- Decimals
- Percentages
- Ratios and proportions.
Calculators are NOT permitted.
Is there a fee for this test?
There is no fee required for the Nursing Math Diagnostic test.

Where can I take the test?
You may take the Nursing Mathematics Diagnostic Test in any testing center. If you wish to take the test at the Norfolk or Portsmouth Campus, you must first make an appointment.
When is the test given?
You may take the test during any semester. However, testing is generally not available the first few full weeks of the semester and after the last day of instruction for summer and fall. In spring, the test is available through May 15. Check the specific dates the Nursing Math Diagnostic test is available and the hours of operation for the Testing Centers, and remember that you must make an appointment to take the test at the Norfolk and Portsmouth Testing Centers.
NOTE: The deadline for consideration for fall admission is May 15. The Nursing Diagnostic Test must be taken prior to that date. Students may not repeat the test within one academic year.
NOTE: The deadline for consideration for fall admission is December 1. If applying for early admission consideration, the test must be completed by December 1. 
What do I need to bring?
- Students must bring a picture ID to be admitted to the test.
- There is no fee for taking this test.
What is the passing score on the test?
You will earn four scores, one for each skill area included in the test - - decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios & proportions. You must earn 90% or greater in each of the four areas.
What happens after testing?
If your scores are not 90% in each of the four areas (decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios & proportions), you will need to enroll in and successfully complete MTH 1, Basic Mathematics for Nursing, before enrolling in the first nursing curricular course. You can see a counselor right away to help you enroll.
Also, you will be contacted by the nursing program and provided any further necessary information. |
