Chesapeake Campus Scholarships @ TCC

  • The TCC Scholarship Application and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be picked up from the campus Financial Aid Office, or fill out a FAFSA online using TCC College Code 003712 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
  • Information regarding the approximate monetary value of each scholarship can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office after May 1.
  • The priority application deadline for scholarships, unless otherwise noted, is April 1 prior to the award year.
  • To ensure your application for scholarship is complete, please register during Priority Registration.
  • Application may be accepted after April 1st or until all scholarship funds are awarded.
  • A "Thank you" letter must be submitted by each student who receives a scholarship award unless otherwise noted.

Brian P. Damiani International Experience Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Victoria Damiani in 1996 to support Chesapeake Campus students pursuing an international education experience. The Ad Hoc International Education Committee at the Chesapeake Campus will be responsible for defining an appropriate international experience.

Criteria:

• Completed a minimum of 12 credit hours
• Continuing student (6 credit hours at time of application)
• Student at Chesapeake Campus
• GPA of 3.0 or higher

Application Materials:

TCC Scholarship Application
• Written proposal (no more than two pages, typed and single-spaced) explaining:
    1. the international activity to be completed including dates, location, and a   

    contact person
    2. the reasons why the student wants to participate in this activity
    3. the benefits that the student would reap from participating in this activity
    4. the breakdown and total cost of the activity (budget may be attached)

• Evaluations from at least 2 past or current instructors submitted directly to financial aid office
• Agree to be interviewed by the International Education Committee of the Chesapeake Campus if asked
• Agree to be available to share the international experience with classes and/or other college groups

Charlie Maxwell Memorial Horticulture Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by Bill Maxwell in 2006 in memory of his wife, Charlie Maxwell, to support students in TCC's Horticulture program. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books, and other expenses associated with the pursuit of training in horticulture.

Criteria:

• Recipient must have horticulture career goals
• Must be officially enrolled in the horticulture curriculum at TCC
• Must complete a scholarship application through the Financial Aid Office of the Chesapeake Campus

Chesapeake Campus General Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established through donations to the Tidewater Community College Educational Foundation.  Scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, or books.

• Must be curretly enrolled in a degree or certificate program at TCC

Continuing student (minimum of 6 completed credits)
• Cumulative GPA 2.5

Funds to be equally awarded in two semesters

Amount of scholarship award per student not to exceed tuition, fees, and/or books

Letter of recommendation is required with application from one of the following:

  TCC faculty member, faculty from another institution, or employer

Chesapeake Martin Myrtle Accounting Scholarship

Description:

Established by Gregory and Carolyn Satz in 2005 to support the education of TCC students with Accounting or Business career goals. Carolyn Satz teaches Accounting at the Chesapeake Campus. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.  There will be two awards of $400 each per semester, spring and fall, for a total of $1,600 in one academic year.  Funds may be used for summer semester if needed.

Criteria:

•  Recipient must have Accounting or Business career goals

•  Accounting club students are preferred, but non-members are also eligible

•  Must be officially enrolled as a full-time or part-time (minimum of 6 credit hours) in the Business Administration or Accounting plans (curriculum) at TCC

•  The recipient must be a Chesapeake Campus student

•  The recipient must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 with a minimum 3.0 in Accounting

•  Each applicant must provide, in writing, an essay of no more than 500 words describing their career plans and goals and community involvement

•  Each applicant must submit one recommendation from accounting or business faculty

•  The recipient may apply more than once

Chesapeake Master Gardener Volunteer Scholarship

Description:

Established in February 2004 by the Chesapeake Master Gardener Volunteers to support the education of students in TCC's Horticulture Program. The scholarship is one award of $500 each per semester, spring and fall, for a total of $1,000 in one academic year. The funds can be used during the summer if needed. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

•  Recipient must have horticulture career goals

•  Must be officially enrolled in the horticulture curriculum at TCC

•  The recipient must be a Chesapeake Campus student

•  The recipient must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 with a minimum 3.0 in Horticulture

•  Each applicant must provide, in writing, a description of their Horticulture related extra-curricular activities in the field of Horticulture and their Horticulture Goals

•  The recipient's description above must be forwarded to the Development Office    The Development Office will forward the information to the Scholarship Committee of the Chesapeake Master Gardener Volunteers (CMGV)

•  The recipient may apply more than once

•  Unused Chesapeake Master Gardener Volunteer Scholarship funds that have not been distributed are to be reinvested into the Chesapeake Master Gardener Volunteer Scholarship

Christopher M. Garrett Memorial Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by Larry and Cheryl Garrett in 1998 in memory of their son who was a student at the Chesapeake Campus. Scholarship funds should be applied to tuition and fees.

Criteria:

• Financial need
• Student at Chesapeake Campus
• Minimum of 12 credit hours
• Associate Degree candidate
• GPA of 2.5 or higher to maintain scholarship

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

CIBA Foundation Annual Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established in 2009 by the CIBA Corporation/CIBA Foundation to promote science and technology and specifically to support students pursuing an education in electromechanical studies, especially recent high school graduates.  The scholarship funds can be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with pursuing an education in the aforementioned field.  Recent high school graduates are highly encouraged to apply.

Criteria:

• Student must be attending Tidewater Community College’s Chesapeake Campus.

Student can be a full or part-time with preference given to full-time students.

• Students from Suffolk must be given first preference in selection.

• Students must be enrolled in the electromechanical program.

• Student must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Cowden/Knight Memorial Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established in memory of two former TCC faculty members. Dr. Gerald Steffens Cowden, former professor of history at the Chesapeake Campus, was a dedicated teacher, accomplished scholar, and a loyal member of the campus community. Dr. Carol Lynn Knight, also a former history professor, distinguished herself as a recipient of both teaching and academic awards, including the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award and the Chancellor’s Commonwealth Professor Award (offered by the Virginia Community College System). The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• Full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours per semester)
• Enrolled in either the A.A. degree program (Liberal Arts) or the A.S. degree program (Natural Sciences)
• Expressed intention to pursue a baccalaureate degree at a four-year institution
• Continuing student (15 credit hours completed)
• GPA of 3.2 or higher

George Flaherty Trust Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by the estate of the late George Flaherty to assist students enrolled in the electrical program. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• GPA of 2.0 or higher
• Full-time or part-time student
• New or continuing student
• Greatest financial need after other criteria are met

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Hampton Roads Automobile Dealers Association Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by the Hampton Roads Automobile Dealers Association to assist students in the Automotive Technology A.A.S. program. Scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books. Successful candidates will be selected by the Tidewater Community College HRADA Scholarship Committee. Special consideration will be given to persons with prior automotive training and/or experience.

Criteria:

• Resident of the State of Virginia
• Plan on a career as an automotive technician
• Continuing student full-time or part-time if first year general education requirements met
• High school graduate with a GPA of 2.5 or higher from a high school in the Hampton Roads area. Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher to receive the award for the second and subsequent semesters. Students having demonstrated automotive technology ability through previously successful completion of high school automotive technology class will receive preference.
• The recipient must agree to employment with a HRADA member at a prevailing rate (if offered following graduation). This employment agreement will be on a ‘one-for-one’ basis. For each full academic year of assistance, the recipient will agree to work for one full year for a HRADA member. In the event this recipient fails to meet this requirement, or if the recipient fails to complete the requirements for the A.A.S. degree, the recipient agrees to repay Tidewater Community College the full amount received from this award.
• Enter the program with and maintain a good driving record.
• Agree to complete the college’s Automotive Technology Associate of Applied Sciences degree according to the schedule provided upon initial acceptance for the HRADA Scholarship.

Horticulture Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established and supported by various garden clubs in the South Hampton Roads region to support students in the Horticulture Program at TCC. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books and other expenses associated with the pursuit of training in horticulture.

Criteria:

• Recipient must have horticulture career goals.

• Must be officially enrolled in the horticulture curriculum at TCC.

• Each applicant must complete an application for the scholarship provided by Professor Ken Spencer of the Horticulture program. The application will include the student's goals in the field of horticulture as well as their need for the scholarship.

• The applicant must also complete a scholarship application through the Financial Aid Office.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

John Winkles Memorial Scholarship (Toyota T-10)

Description:

This scholarship was established by Central Atlantic Toyota Dealers to assist students in the Toyota T-Ten Automotive program. Funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books. Candidates will be selected by the Toyota T-Ten Scholarship Committee.

Criteria:

• Accepted or enrolled in the Toyota T-Ten Program at Tidewater Community College
• GPA of 2.5 or higher
• First year student – provide a letter of intent describing your interest in the Toyota Program; or, display satisfactory performance upon dealer and classroom review, including attendance, participation, and performance

Jonathan R. Payton Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established in 2008 by Dr. Winifred Reid in memory of her son, Jonathan, who was a TCC student before he passed away in 2006.  The scholarship will be awarded for students to purchase books for classes they are attending at the Chesapeake Campus of TCC.

Criteria:

Student must be pursuing a degree at Tidewater Community College’s Chesapeake Campus.

Student can be a full-time or part-time student.

Student must have not have met the cost of attendance for the year.

If a continuing student at TCC, student must have an overall GPA of 2.7.

If a new student at TCC, student must have a high school GPA of 2.8.

Student must submit a brief paragraph describing his or her need for the scholarship, why he or she is the best candidate for the award, career interests and professional goals.

Preference will be given to a student who is returning to school after a hiatus or a student who is a single parent.

Josh Hastings Memorial Theatre Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established in 2008 by the friends of Joshua Hastings.  Josh was a student at the Chesapeake Campus who passed away in February 2008.  The scholarship was established to honor his positive contributions to the TCC Theatre program and to recognize students who share his attributes.  The scholarship funds should be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with the Theatre program.

Criteria:

• Student must be pursuing an Associates Degree in General Studies with substantive coursework in theatre at Tidewater Community College’s Chesapeake Campus.

• Student must have successfully completed his or her first semester at TCC in good academic standing.

• Student must plan to transfer to a four-year institution’s Theatre Arts program.

• Student must submit a brief essay on the following:

     Describe your commitment to and activities with the TCC Theatre program

     Describe other college and community activities that you are involved with

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established in 1990 by the Chesapeake Campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges. The scholarship is intended to support an academically successful and extracurricular active student.

Criteria:

• Completed a minimum of twelve credit hours towards a recognized degree
• Enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours per semester at Tidewater Community College, three credit hours of which must be at the Chesapeake Campus
• GPA of 3.5 or higher overall
• Minimum of two letters of recommendation (One must be instructor from the Chesapeake Campus. Other letters will be accepted from previous teachers, clergy, community leaders, etc.)
• Community involvement and extracurricular activities preferred

Stockbridge Foundation Theatre Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by the trustees of the Stockbridge Foundation in 2004 to support the education of students in TCC's Theatre program.  Scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees and books.

Criteria:

•  Priority for Chesapeake Campus students.

•  Student must be active in the Theatre Program.

•  Full time or part time student.

•  New or continuing student.

Students will complete the TCC Scholarship Application and submit the form to the Chesapeake Campus Financial Aid Office.   Application packets will be forwarded to Edwin Jacob, Department Chair for review and selection.

Woman's Club of South Norfolk

Description:

This scholarship was established by the Woman's Club of South Norfolk to support the education of female students from Chesapeake.  Scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

•  Female

•  2.5 GPA or higher
•  Chesapeake resident within 23324 zip code

•  Full time or part time student

•  New or continuing student

•  Scholarship recipient will attend one Woman's Club of South Norfolk meeting for acknowledgement
