All USA Academic Team

Description: The All-USA Academic Team program annually recognizes 60 outstanding two-year college students.  Presidents of eligible colleges or their designees are invited to submit as many as two nominations from each campus of their institutions. In selecting their institutions' nominees, presidents are asked to consider outstanding grade point averages; participation in honors programs; awards, honors, and recognition for academic achievement and service to the college and the community.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Description: The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.  A faculty representative will serve as liaison between the institution and the Foundation.   Two-year institutions may nominate up to two current sophomores.

Criteria:

• Must be a full-time student planning to transfer to baccalaureate program

• Have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0

• Be a  US citizen, a resident alien, or a US national

Brown v. Board of Education

Description: Scholarships are awarded to students entering their junior year of college. Scholarships are $1,000 per year for two academic years (i.e., $500 per semester)
Candidates for the scholarships available through the Brown Foundation are selected on the basis of grade point average, school, community and leisure activities, career plans and goals in education, essays, and recommendations.

Criteria:

• Be admitted to a teacher education program

• Be enrolled in an institution of higher learning

• Be enrolled at least half-time

• Have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.

• Submit two recommendations: one from teacher and one from a person familiar with the applicants skills and abilities

Children of Enlisted Military Personnel Scholarship

Description:

In appreciation of those who have stood by our servicemen and servicewomen, Tidewater Community College will be awarding five one-year scholarships to the sons and daughters of enlisted personnel, one each from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy. 

Criteria:

• Completion of application form.

• Dependent of an active duty enlisted person (E-1 to E-9).

• Minimum high school grade point average of 2.5 (4-point scale).

• Evidence of community service.

• One-page essay explaining how the scholarship will be used for further education or career.

• Full-time student.

• Scholarships for up to one year's tuition at the in-state tuition rate will be awarded.

• Five one-year scholarships will be awarded, one each from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy.

• Submit application to TCC no later than June 30.

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation

Description:  Annually awards 400 scholarships of $1,000 and $2,000 to students attending two-year higher education institutions granting terminal degrees.  Coca-Cola Scholarships are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed.

The Coca-Cola Two Year Colleges Scholarship is now part of the All Academic Teams for Community Colleges Scholarship administered by Phi Theta Kappa. Criteria:

• Must be nominated by campus/ college

• Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

• Validated 100 hours of community service within the last 12 months

• Must be planning to enroll in at least two courses during the next term at TCC

• May not be children of Coca Cola employees

Glenn Fox Merit Scholarship (VMATYC)

Description:  The Virginia Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges has announced the Glenn Fox Merit Scholarship.  This scholarship will provide $500 per semester for the 2012-2012 Academic Year. All application materials must be postmarked by June 18, 2012. Notification of acceptance will be made by July 26, 2012. Submit all application materials to:

Criteria:

  • Intent to major in mathematics, computer science, or mathematics education and demonstrate potential for success in any of these areas. Preference will be given to those candidates who intend to teach mathematics or computer science.
  • Demonstrate ability, determination, and motivation necessary for successful academic performance.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent by Fall Semester 2012.
  • Have completed at least 12 semester hours of college-level courses, including 3 hours of transfer mathematics at a Virginia community college by the end of Spring Semester 2011 with a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Continue for two semesters (Fall 2012 - Spring 2013) at a Virginia community college and enroll in at least 6 semester hours of college-level courses, including a transfer-level mathematics course, for each semester the scholarship is received.

Honors Mentorships
Students receiving Honors Mentorship Awards are selected by a committee for their special talents in their field of study.
Honors Mentorship students are each assigned to one of the divisions throughout the college and assist in research and other academic pursuits for faculty.
Faculty serve as mentors to students on assigned academic projects and activities in their field of study.
When selected for an Honors Mentorship, the student will fill out the TCC Scholarship Application form and submit it to the campus Honors Coordinator.
International Study Abroad Scholarships

Scholarships have been established to encourage the study of foreign languages, and to increase both written and spoken proficiency. Awards are to be used in a summer study abroad program.

CRITERIA:

  • recipients will be the students earning the highest average in the French language program and the student earning the highest average in the Spanish program
  • full or part-time student
  • continuing student (12 credit hours completed in either French or Spanish language)

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

Description:  Annually awards 400 scholarships pf $1,000 and $2,000 to students attending two-year higher education institutions granting terminal degrees.  Students interested in this scholarship must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their institutions.

• Be a current student at an accredited US community college or two-year institution with sophomore status or recent graduate.

• Plan to enroll full-time in a baccalaureate program at an accredited college or university.

• Have cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.50 or better.

• Be nominated by his/her two-year institution.

• Not previously have been nominated for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Program Scholarship.

League for Innovation in the Community College Scholarship

Description:

University of Phoenix is pleased to collaborate with the League for Innovation in the Community College (the “League”) to offer a scholarship program. The League is an international organization dedicated to catalyzing the community college movement. The League hosts conferences and institutes, develops web resources, conducts research, produces publications, provides services, and leads projects and initiatives with member colleges, corporate partners, and other agencies in its continuing efforts to make a positive difference for students and communities.

Through this scholarship program, fifteen (15) full-tuition scholarships will be offered. Each scholarship will allow a prospective student the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree program at University of Phoenix. Applicants must have recently graduated with an associate’s degree from a League Alliance member college with a GPA of at least 3.0. Recipients may choose to attend a University of Phoenix on-ground campus or may attend University of Phoenix online.

Submission deadline in June 28, 2012

Criteria:

  1. Applicants who reside in the United States must meet one of the following requirements: be a legal resident of the United States; have been granted permanent residency; have a valid visa that does not prohibit educational studies; have been granted temporary protected status along with approved Notice of Action issued by Citizen Immigration Services and verified through CIS Form g-845; or have been granted asylum along with the approved Notice of Action issued by the Citizen Immigration Services.
  2. Applicants must have graduated with their associate’s degree from a League Alliance member college within the past five years prior to the date of this application. The applicant’s associate’s degree must have been conferred by the scholarship award date to be considered eligible.
  3. Applicants must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher for their respective degree.
  4. Applicants, once enrolled, must not receive a total of 100% tuition reimbursement from any source(s) including but not limited to: corporate reimbursement, other scholarships and/or private grants with the exception of Veteran’s Administration GI benefits or Veteran’s Administration Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits and Title IV financial aid funding.
  5. Applicants must not be currently enrolled nor in the process of enrolling at any University of Phoenix campus or in any online program at any time prior to the scholarship award date. Applicants who enroll after submitting an application or before the scholarship award date are not eligible to be a recipient of this scholarship.
  6. Applicants must meet all admissions requirements of University of Phoenix.
  7. Applicants must not be an employee or family member (spouse, dependent child or domestic partner) of an employee of Apollo Group, Inc., University of Phoenix, Western International University, Institute for Professional Development or any other subsidiary of Apollo Group, Inc.
  8. Applicants must submit a complete, signed application, together with all supporting documentation by the deadline date listed under the Selection Process section. The completion of the application form does not create an obligation to award a scholarship to applicant.
  9. Applicants must submit completed essays as described in the Essay section. High importance will be placed on the applicant’s desire to advance in their education, with an emphasis on furthering their careers, and their impact in the community in which they reside.
  10. Applicants must submit one (1) copy of their unofficial transcript for their relevant associate’s degree.

Other Study Abroad Scholarships

There is a general, endowed scholarship fund for study abroad established for each campus.

CRITERIA:

  • continuing student (minimum of six completed credits)
  • GPA of 2.5 (or higher)
  • enrolled in a degree or certificate program
  • currently enrolled for at least six credits

Outstanding High School Graduate Awards

These are merit scholarships granted annually to one graduate from each public high school in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth (includes Nansemond River High School in Suffolk), and Virginia Beach.

This award is based on academic ability and is awarded on a competitive basis.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:

Interested individuals should contact their high school counselor.

  • Applications may be obtained from the student's high school guidance counselor.
  • The student’s high school should mail the application, along with a letter of recommendation from the student’s counselor, teacher or principal; an official high school transcript; and a TCC Admissions application to the Coordinator of Enrollment Services at the campus serving the student’s high school by February 22, 2013.
Private Scholarships

Private scholarships are created and privately funded by donors for the benefit of specifically named students.


Private scholarships must be researched and applied for by the student. Applications for Private scholarships must be submitted to the organization and/or company providing the award.


The campus Financial Aid Office will acknowledge the private scholarship gift and will ensure that recipients are properly identified and receive the scholarship funds in accordance with the donor’s wishes.

Recruitment Grant for Future Teachers Scholarship

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to a deserving Tidewater Community College student who has been formally accepted at an accredited four-year college or university and who intends to become a teacher

Award Component: One $1,500 scholarship, with the money awarded in the student’s name to the college or university

Criteria:

• Female sophomore, majoring in education, with 30 or more credits accumulated

• In need of financial assistance

• Minimum of 3.0 GPA

• A Virginia Beach resident

• Enrolled F/T or P/T at TCC

• Formally accepted at an accredited four-year college or university

• Willing to attend at least one chapter function to meet chapter members

Virginia Space Grant Scholarships
Description: 

Awards $1,000 to education-seeking students enrolled at Virginia Space Grants universities. Encourages applications from minorities, females and persons with disabilities. The scholarship program is open to U.S. citizens who are currently enrolled in a Virginia community college and have completed at least one semester of coursework. Awards are generally made to full-time students (12 semester hours), but part-time students (6–9 hours) demonstrating academic merit are also eligible.

• Enrolled in coursework or interest in technological fields supporting aerospace (math, science, engineering, computers, electronics, and industrial technology)

The Visual Arts Center Academic Scholarships

These are academic scholarships for students with outstanding portfolios and will be awarded for study in fine arts, graphic design, crafts, or photography at TCC’s Visual Arts Center in Olde Towne Portsmouth.


Students interested in the Visual Arts Center Academic Scholarships should call the Director of the Visual Arts Center at 757-822-1888.


When selected for a VAC scholarship by the Director of the Visual Arts Center, the student will fill out the TCC Scholarship Application form and submit it to the Portsmouth Campus Financial Aid Office.
