Career Information - Interview Follow-up
After the interview, it
is important that you follow up with your contact. Perseverance pays off.
Many people do not follow up after an interview or
other job search contact and this will distinguish you. There are three important steps you should take following an interview:
- Review and Analysis
Review what happened in
your interview. What could you have done to make it better? What else could
you have emphasized? Ask yourself questions like these: Did I show that I can do the job? Do they see me fitting in with their group? Am I compatible with the supervisor? What contributions can I make? What concerns do they have?
- Thank You Letter
More than just being polite, a thank you letter is a way of getting your name
in front of an employer again. A well-written thank you note helps you to stand
apart from the crowd. Remember that a thank you letter is not the place for a hard sales
pitch. It is an opportunity to show that you are a conscientious person who takes the time to show appreciation for
the efforts of others.
- Mail the letter two days after the interview. Mailing it the same day makes you appear too anxious. If you wait longer than two days you lose impact.
- Phone Call or Visit
Call the following
week to see how the selection process is coming along and express your interest in the job. Introduce a new point about why you qualify and arrange a second meeting. If you can go in
person to follow up, do so.
- If you are not offered
the job, leave the door open for future contact. Another job may open up for which you are more qualified.
Ask the employer for suggestions and alternatives.
- Keep in contact with
the employer.
