Academic Regulations

How can I apply for graduation?

All students must submit an Application for Graduation to the Enrollment Services Office by the deadlines.  You can go to http://www.tcc.edu/students/forms/forms.htm to download a current Application for Graduation, to view application deadlines, and receive general graduation information

What can I do if a course I need to graduate is not offered when I need it?

Talk to your academic advisor or division chair.  The safest thing to do is to follow your curriculum sheet from the beginning, so you don’t end up in a tight situation.  In some cases, you might be able to obtain a waiver/substitution, which allows you to substitute another course for the required course you cannot schedule. Learn as much as you can about your entire program when you start to avoid the kind of situation.

I will not be able to attend the graduation ceremony, what should I do?

If you are unable to attend the ceremony, you must submit a written request to be excused to the Dean of Students and Enrollment Services at your campus of record.

How long will it take to receive my diploma?

You should expect to receive your diploma in the mail in 6 – 8 weeks if you have fulfilled your academic requirements.

Where do I get my cap and gown?

Caps and gowns may be purchased through campus bookstores.

How many people can I invite to the graduation ceremony?

There is no limit on the number of guests you may invite to the graduation ceremony and tickets are not required.

How do I know if I am graduating with honors?

Students who have fulfilled the requirements for AA, AS, AAS, diploma, and one-year certificate programs are eligible for graduation with honors, based on the cumulative grade point averages listed below.  Honors are not awarded for career studies certificates.

3.2 Cum laude with honor
3.5 Magna cum laude with high honor
3.8 Summa cum laude with highest honor

What is the computer competency test and do I have to take it?

Demonstrated competency in internet/e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and database management is required of all TCC degree graduates.  For more information, visit your campus Enrollment Services Office or go to http://www.tcc.edu/students/graduates/index.htm

Can I keep taking courses if my grades aren’t very good?

TCC won’t throw you out for one bad semester, but you will be placed on Academic Warning when you receive an “F”or when your semester grade point average is less then 2.0.  Academic Warning is your wake-up call.  If you continue to do poorly, you will be placed on Academic Probation, which means that you must see a counselor before you enroll and you may not be allowed to carry a full load of course.  Keep in mind that some financial aid programs require you to be in good academic standing to keep your benefits.  For more information on Academic Standing, consult the Student Handbook or go to http://www.tcc.edu/forms/handbook/20032004/5_rules.pdf

If I repeat a course because I got a low grade the first time, what happens to the original grade?

The original grade remains on your transcript, but the last grade you earned is used to meet your degree requirements and to compute your grade point average.  Keep in mind that if you retake a class and receive a lower grade, the second grade is still the one that counts.

Can I get an F removed from my record?

Not unless it was an error on the part of the college.  You can, however, take the course again.  In most cases, the second grade you earn will be used to meet your degree requirements and to compute your grade point average.  For exceptions, see the Repeated Course Policy, in the Student Handbook or go to http://www.tcc.edu/forms/handbook/20032004/5_rules.pdf .  If you have been away from TCC for five years, check out the Academic Renewal Policy in the student handbook or go to http://www.tcc.edu/forms/handbook/20032004/5_rules.pdf

What happens if I quit coming to a course or never attend at all?

You may receive a “F” or an “U” if you do not formally withdraw from the class by the last day to withdraw without academic penalty. That date is listed in the TCC Schedule of Classes and the TCC Catalog for 16-week courses, and available from Enrollment Services for special session courses. Your instructors are not responsible for withdrawing you from your courses. Remember: those “F’s” and “U’s” cannot be removed from your record.

What is the procedure for making up an “I” (Incomplete) grade?

An “I” grade gives you extra time to fulfill course requirements that you were unable to complete for unavoidable, verifiable (yes, you need a note) reasons.  You must have been making satisfactory progress in the course at the time you stopped attending and you must have completed at least 75% of the course to get an “I”.  It is your responsibility to contact your instructor as soon as possible so you can arrange to finish the course work and testing.  DO NOT sign up for the class the next semester.  DO NOT put off making up the work until the deadline. For more information, go to http://www.tcc.edu/forms/handbook/20032004/5_rules.pdf

How will I get my grades?

TCC will no longer be mailing grades to students’ residences.  If you would like to view your grades, you will need to access the Student Information System (SIS), log on to your student record, click on “For Students”, then click on “Academic Summary”, and lastly, click on “Course/Grade History”.  Go to www.tcc.edu/SIS to access your record.

What is the difference between an AS/AA degree and an AAS degree?

The AS (Associate in Science) and AA (Associate in Arts) degrees prepare you to transfer to a four-year college or university.  TCC has guaranteed transfer agreements with some area colleges and universities.  Our counselors work with you to maximize your transfer credits.

The AAS (Associate in Applied Science) are Occupational/Technical Programs that prepare you for entry-level jobs or promotions in your field.  You also get a solid background in general education.  Some AAS programs transfer to specific four-year colleges, please check with your counselor or advisor for further information.

To view a list of the degree programs that TCC offers, go to http://www.tcc.edu/academics/programs/index.htm

Where can I get help choosing a major?

Counselors on each campus can help you explore your interests and abilities so that you can make informed choices about majors and careers.  Ask them about college resources and 1-credit student development (STD) courses can make your search easier.

How can I appeal my final grade?

The college’s grade appeal procedure provides a process for contesting final grades awarded. There are two grounds for appeal: (1) the grade was assigned in a manner other than that prescribed in the course syllabus, either originally or as amended by the instructor with appropriate notice; or (2) the grade was assigned in a manner different than that used for other students in the class. You must submit your written final grade appeal to the coordinator of Enrollment Services/Records or designee on the campus where the course was scheduled within 10 working days of the first day of classes of the next semester. The Student Final Grade AppealProcedurecan be found at http://www.tcc.edu/forms/handbook/20032004/9_rights.pdf
