Online Courses
Offered predominantly on the World Wide Web, TCC online classes are academically equivalent to face-to-face classes but have few or no face-to-face meetings. Online classes offer many benefits to disciplined, motivated students: flexible scheduling, active and interactive learning, time for reflection, enhanced verbal and computer skills, and participation in an online learning community.
Online classes that use Bb and other online delivery methods have the same content and the same academic rigor as their on-site counterparts. With their alternative access and delivery media, online classes are particularly valuable for motivated, disciplined students who cannot easily attend regularly scheduled on-site classes because of their jobs, their health, or other obligations.
Typically, students are expected to access the World Wide Web and email daily or several times a week, to read and write and participate in other class activities independently and collaboratively, to meet class deadlines, and to devote about 4 hours a week for each credit hour (12 hours for a 3-credit class). Some classes include face-to-face meetings or other offline activities as described on individual class Web pages.
TCC faculty use a variety of testing methods to assess student progress and achievement. In some online courses, faculty may require proctored examinations. A proctored exam is administered and supervised by a person (the proctor) in a controlled environment such as a testing center. TCC maintains a testing center on each of its four campuses where an online student may be required to go to complete specific exams or assignments. If you are unable to visit one of TCC’s testing centers and your instructor requires proctored tests or assignments, contact your instructor to discuss alternative proctoring arrangements. Any costs associated with proctoring outside of TCC facilities are the responsibility of the student.
