The Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College (VAC) announces its winter exhibition. Indiana Artists: Charles Gick and Sigrid Zahner will run from January 21 through March 8, 2012. The Artist’s Reception will be held on Friday, January 20 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Both artists in this program are from West Lafayette, Indiana and are professors in the art department at Purdue University.
Charles Gick creates installations that explore memory, the body, emotions and the sensory experiences that are shared with the natural environment. His work at the VAC will include: large suspended garments created from soiled mops; a compelling video installation, Flowers from the Mouth, that has resulted in a variety of interpretations; and the wall installation, Dirt, Water, Spit and Spoons, a metaphor of transforming the futile into the fertile.
Sigrid Zahner creates prints and earthenware figures that depict her interest in a variety of universal ideas. Her reaction to war, religion, family and politics is profoundly and interestingly reflected in her work, particularly in her clay pieces. These small fragile creations combine highly detailed faces and body parts with other segmented components resulting in abstract humanistic forms.
