The Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College presents:

Pictures of Things: Contemporary Still Life Photography

June 8 through August 10, 2008

images:

The exhibition, Pictures of Things: Contemporary Still Life Photography, will be held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from June 8 through August 10, 2008. The Artist’s Reception will take place on Saturday, June 7 at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Pictures of Things features work by 11 emerging and established photographers including: Christa Kreeger Bowden (Lexington, VA); Dornith Doherty (Southlake, TX); Victor Frailing (Chesapeake, VA); Rosanne Haaland (Suffolk, VA); Victoria Mara Heilweil (San Francisco, CA); James Henkel (Minneapolis, MN); Trish Igo (Denton, TX); Kally Malcom (Lincoln, NE); Lori Nix (Brooklyn, NY); Jill O’Brien (Denton, TX); and Angilee Wilkerson (Denton, TX).

In their distinctly different ways, the artists explore the changing face of early 21st century still life photography. Imagery includes a variety of subjects from the documentation of dead animals and insects to the intimacy of an unmade bed. Toy knights, stacks of books and miniature catastrophic scenes are also represented in the exhibition. In most, ordinary objects are presented in unusual and compelling ways.

Works in Pictures of Things represent a number of photographic media and range in size from small to large-scale; they are created in black and white and color. Some are highly manipulated.
