The 36th Annual Student Art Show

The 36th Annual Student Art Show was held in the galleries of Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center (VAC), March 25 through April 26, 2007. Featuring over 250 works by more than 150 students, media included drawing, painting, photography, glass, ceramics, sculpture, computer generated imagery, animation and mixed media. Works were completed for VAC classes since May 2006 and represented program courses in Fine Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Pottery and Glassblowing.
Gayle M. Paul, Arts Curator, Courthouse Galleries, Portsmouth Museums, served as Judge. The Awards Presentation took place Saturday, March 31, 2007, 11 a.m., at the Commodore Theatre, 421 High Street, Portsmouth. At the event, Paul presented over $4,500 in awards in recognition of artistic excellence. The Opening Reception took place at the Visual Arts Center following the Awards Presentation.
Complementary programming for the exhibition included illustrated lectures by a Visiting Artist and a Visiting Art Historian. On Tuesday, April 3, 2007, Elizabeth Mead, Assistant Professor of Art, The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, presented The site is where you are. On Thursday, April 12, 2007, Aaron H. De Groft, Ph.D., Director, Muscarelle Museum of Art, The College of William and Mary, presented The Rediscovery and Restoration of a Lost Seventeenth-Century Masterwork: Luca Giordano’s “Bacchanalia”. Both programs began at 12:30 p.m. and were held in rooms 208 and 209 of the VAC.
