The exhibition, Chroma: Gay-Maker, Kobylinska, Ynko, was held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from July 14 through August 29, 2007.
Chroma featured work by three regional artists including Janice Gay-Maker (Norfolk, VA), Barbara Kobylinska (Virginia Beach, VA) and Dns Ynko (Portsmouth, VA). All three artists explored the use of color in distinctly different ways.
In her oil paintings, Janice Gay-Maker focused on the landscape. She was inspired by nature and the ever-changing qualities of light associated with plein-air painting. She combined a bold color palette with a dense application of paint, creating works that were rich in texture and visual energy.
Barbara Kobylinska created large-scale clay sculptures that depicted natural objects including birds, trees and flowers. Her brightly colored works pushed the technical limits of the potter’s craft. Smaller organic forms and vessels provided an interesting contrast to her larger, more colorful work.
The abstract photographs produced by Dns Ynko explored the relationship of form and color. These compelling images seemed weightless and dream-like, conveying a sense of stillness and quiet contemplation. |
