The exhibition, Pictures of Places: Contemporary Landscape Photography, was held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from May 12 through June 28, 2007.
Pictures of Places featured work by 10 emerging and established photographers including: Christine Carr (Roanoke, VA); Beau Comeaux (Dallas, TX); Matt Gehring (Rochester, NY); Corey George (Land O’ Lakes, FL); Megan King (Marion, IN); Glen McClure (Norfolk, VA); Elizabeth Mellott-Carreón (Dallas, TX); Thomas Moore (Barhamsville, VA); Anna Norton (Philadelphia, PA); and Jeff Rich (Savannah, GA).
In their distinctly different ways, the artists explored the changing face of early 21st century landscape photography. Imagery included a variety of subjects from the documentation of natural disasters to the impact of man’s presence in the world. Rural American and European scenes were represented in the exhibition. In many, ordinary sites and structures were presented in unusual and compelling ways.
Works in Pictures of Places represented a number of photographic media including C prints, giclee, inkjet, Iltrachrome, and carbon pigment prints, and mixed media artists’ books. Photographs ranged in size from small to large-scale; they were created in black and white and color, and were two and three-dimensional. Some were highly manipulated. |
