The exhibition, Robert Sites: Here to There, took place at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from January 27 through March 13, 2008.
In Here to There, Robert Sites combined his interests in art history, literature, storytelling and time spent in Italy to create highly imaginative works of art that provided a unique blend of fantasy and reality. Sites’ works included drawings and watercolors influenced by illuminated manuscripts; paper cutouts inspired by the circus and 18th century Neapolitan presepio (crèches); and political paintings that responded to the country’s current administration.
Animal imagery tied much of the artist’s work together. In his precise illustrations and drawings, legendary and mythological creatures co-existed with contemporary farm animals and circus performers. Clever metaphors juxtaposed with literal representations provided the viewer with an engaging visual experience. |
