2014/15 Calendar of Events

Fire & Water: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp
May 3 – June 19, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 3, 7 p.m.

For this photo documentary program, artist Pam Ponce (Virginia Beach, VA) worked with staff from the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and the Youth Conservation Corps to provide documentation of the burn areas from the 2008 and 2011 fires. The exhibition features panoramic photographs, original prints, sculptural elements and educational panels that combine art and science and reflect the complexity and fragility of natural ecosystems. A gallery talk will precede the Opening Reception at 6:30 p.m.

 

Charlotte Potter: Fragile Cartography
July 4 – August 28, 2014
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 10, 7 p.m.

Charlotte Potter (Norfolk, VA), Glass Studio Manager, Chrysler Museum of Art, will exhibit new and recent works. Created around the theme of personal cartography, she will map emotions, relationships, and the body through a series of projects using glass and new media. A gallery talk will precede the Opening Reception at 6:30 p.m.

FIRST FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 5 – 8 P.M.| Fragile Cartography continues at the Visual Arts Center with refreshments. The opening reception for Chrysler Glass Studio Assistants: Mapping the Next Generation will take place at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center adjacent to the VAC at 400 High Street. The event will feature music by Robbin Thompson and hot glass performance art.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 9 A.M. – 3 P.M. | Glass Acts will take place at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and will include glassblowing demonstrations, performances, and make 'n take activities; Charlotte Potter will give a gallery talk for Mapping the Next Generation at 2 p.m.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 5:30 P.M. | The illustrated lecture, Between Self and Other will be presented by Charlotte Potter at TCC's Visual Arts Center.


Ed Gibbs: A 35-year Retrospective
September 14 – November 6, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 13, 7 p.m.

VAC Photography Professor and former Director, Ed Gibbs (Norfolk, VA), will present 35 years of his art in a variety of
two and three-dimensional media including photographs, prints, drawings, and multimedia works. A gallery talk will precede the Opening Reception at 6:30 p.m.

 

College Art Transfer Fair
Wednesday, October 8, 2014, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Regional and national institutions offering four-year art programs provide transfer information and answer questions about their respective curricula. Institutions include: Chowan University, CNU, Corcoran College of Art + Design, Longwood University, Maryland Art Institute, NSU, ODU, RISD, SCAD, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Art Institute of Virginia Beach, VCU & Virginia Wesleyan College.

 

45th Annual TCC Art Faculty Exhibition
November 22, 2014 – January 4, 2015

Opening Reception: Friday, November 21, 6 p.m.

Visual Arts Center full-time and adjunct faculty members present a diversity of art media including glass, pottery,

photography, painting, drawing, computer generated work and mixed media.
